Biochemists study chemical compositions, combinations and reactions, engaged in reproduction, growth, metabolism and heredity.
Their work comprises of research/exploration, analysis and creating new procedures and products. Biochemists are engaged in several industrial sectors, such as agriculture, pharmaceutical companies, crime laboratories and clinics / hospitals. Biochemist Skills/Duties
A biochemist’s duties comprises of: analyzing and researching the bio-chemistry of biological mechanisms; studying methods to transmit a characteristic from one life form to another; studying the chemical features of the structure of anti-bodies; designing and carrying out tests to find out genetic disorders, diseases and physical anomalies; developing and assessing new drugs; evaluating foods to establish nutritional values; identifying hormones, enzymes, vitamins, minerals, and allergens, and determining their effects on body functions, cleaning, refining, purifying and synthesizing pharmaceutical compounds; creating and developing laboratory equipments; and improving techniques to process, store and use food, drugs and other chemicals.
Biochemists also prepare reports, documents and recommendations on the basis of their research.
Biochemist Education and Training
• To become a biochemist you need a bachelor’s degree (4 years program) in biology, chemistry or bio-chemistry. Individuals with a bachelor's degree are hired as research assistants or technicians for routine testing and analysis, but their opportunities for advancement are restricted. People with master's degrees are qualified for better jobs.
• Follow up a bachelor’s degree with specialized education in a graduate school, the master’s degree, which takes about 2 years.
• Research positions and teaching at universities require a Doctoral degree in biochemistry, i.e. a PhD, which would take an additional 3 to 4 years.
• If the job revolves around human research or research about pharmaceuticals, you have to acquire a degree of Doctor of Medicine (M.D.).
