Clinical Nurse Job Description
Clinical nurses are a classification of advanced nurses, who have been trained and are qualified to handle a host of mental and physical health problems. Clinical Nurses are required in a wide range of hospital and healthcare settings and the job description would depend upon the setting. They are primarily involved in providing psychotherapy and primary health care services.
Clinical Nurse Skills/Duties
Principally, Clinical Nurses are required to work as a part of a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals, which include doctors, physical therapists, psychologists, social workers, etc. Unlike a staff nurse who is trained in delivering direct care, a clinical nurse has to be more comprehensive in her approach. Clinical nurse is expected to interact with the patient and their families and act as a guide and advocate treatment therapies. Clinical nurse plays an important role as a consultant and an educator by sharing information regarding emerging therapies available to the patients, their options, etc.
In nursing schools, Clinical Nurses are involved in designing and planning the curriculum for training and continued education for nurses. They are expected to provide expert opinion on a wide range of things such as: social work, medical ethics and clinical patient management.
It is important to have a caring attitude and a strong commitment towards helping people to be a part of this career. The personality of a nurse should be emotionally mature and well balanced. Excellent communication skills are a must.
Clinical Nurse Education and Training
• For a career in clinical nursing, it is important to focus on biology, physics, chemistry and mathematics during the high school training.
• After completing high school one has three options to become a clinical nurse. The first option is to complete a two years associate degree program at junior or community college, second option is to complete a three years diploma program with a hospital or gain a bachelors degree in Nursing from a college or a university. For all the programs, one will need to visit the hospitals and gain hands-on training on the subject.
• On completion of the bachelors program, one can go on for a Master’s Degree in Clinical Nursing. For those who don’t complete the bachelor’s program additional training would be required, prior to qualifying for the selection for the Masters program.
• To become a clinical nurse, it is important to become a licensed Registered Nurse, by passing the examination after graduation. The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) conducts examinations in various clinical specialties for the nurses which include psychiatric health, community health, pediatric nursing, home health nursing, gerontological nursing, etc.
Clinical Nurse Job Outlook
A clinical nurse can work in various healthcare and hospital setting depending upon the interest and area of specialization. Clinical nurses are employed in clinics, community health centers, hospitals, mental health hospitals, nursing homes, home healthcare agencies, nursing schools, physician’s offices and the military.
In recent years, the federal government has predicated an increasing shortage of Clinical nurses for the next several years. The demand is far outweighing the supply, and with the right credentials and certification, Clinical nurses will have no trouble in finding the right job and position that suites their requirements.
Clinical Nurse Salary
The salary of a clinical Nurse would depend upon several factors which include their fixed salary plus salary earned from working overtime and on-call basis.
As per the United States Department of Labor, the median income of Clinical Nurses ranges from $55,000 to $ 70,000 per annum.
