Dental Surgeons are often referred to as Oral maxillofacial surgeons, who specialize in treatment and management of defects, trauma and aesthetic features of the oral cavity, namely the teeth, jaw, face and mouth.
Dental Surgeons are often involved in the management of various conditions like facial pain, misaligned teeth and jaws, problems with the wisdom tooth, etc. Further, dental surgeons handle the treatment of trauma, and victims of accidents by offering their services in reconstructive and dental implant surgeries. Some dental surgeons, with expertise in oncology are involved in the management of oral tumors and cysts which affect the jaw.
Dental surgeons are largely involved with maintaining functionality and aesthetic value of the oral and maxillofacial area.
Dental Surgeon Skills/Duties
In addition to having the basic expertise and skills related to medicine and dentistry, a dental surgeon needs to have specialized knowledge of pain management and needs to undertake an advanced training in anesthesia.
He should be good at patient management and interpersonal communication. He invariably works in a clinic or private setting and has to have skills which include management of accounts, hiring employees, managing business overheads and ensuring details of the functioning of the unit.
Dental Surgeon Education and Training
• First you need to complete your Bachelors in Dentistry from a recognized dental school, in order to become a dental surgeon.
• Next, you need to complete a postdoctoral program in dental, surgery and medicine, which can span over a period of four years. For dental surgeons, emphasis is on the oral and facial area, in which the candidate has to spend about 30 months in management of problems related to the oral cavity and maxillofacial region. Irrespective of the course, all residents have to complete at least one year in core surgical management.
• After obtaining a degree in Dentistry, the candidate can apply for maxillofacial surgery or dental surgery in any accredited school across the United States.
• On completion of the training requirements, one needs to pass the National Exam, after which the Dental surgeon can apply for licensure in the state where he/she may wish to practice.
Dental Surgeon Job Outlook
Invariably, dental surgeons, tend to have their own independent practice. However, a few dental surgeons may be associated with hospitals and healthcare institutions, armed forces or public health service systems. Some of the dental surgeons may also be involved in education and training at medical schools.
The work of an oral/dental surgeon would depend upon the setting, either hospital or out patient clinic. In a hospital, the dental surgeon may be on call basis and in extreme cases may have to work as much as 80 hours per week.

The employment and earning prospects in Dentistry as a whole are good. As per the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, it has been projected that employment in the field of dental surgery is projected to grow at the rate of 9 % from 2006 to 2016, while the average median earnings of dental surgeons is approximately $190,420 per annum.
