Emergency Medical Technician Job Description
An Emergency Medical Technician, is trained to respond to emergency calls and provide promote and immediate medical care to the critically ill or injured patients. In addition, the Emergency Medical Technician is also trained to drive the ambulance, so as to reach the designated location, within the shortest stipulated time frame. It is important that Medical Technician follows the requisite traffic ordinances and regulations.
Emergency Medical Technician Skills/Duties
The primary responsibility of an Emergency Medical Technician is to provide prompt post emergency care to the patient. An emergency medical technician is a paramedic who is trained with certain life saving techniques, to provide the first level of emergency care treatment to the patient, before he/she received specialized medical attention and care.
An Emergency Medical Technician needs to have a basic understanding of ensuring staff and patient safety, respond appropriately to stressful situations and also be aware of the basic medical legal principles while providing emergency care.
In addition, the Emergency Medical Technician needs to abide by the regional and State legislations, notify the authorities and ensure protection of property and evidence in case of death of the patient.
Reporting and maintaining a record is an integral part of the Emergency Medical Technicians job duties. The records need to be maintained for the purpose of medico-legal cases or for subsequent management of the patient.
Emergency Medical Technician Education and Training
• To become an Emergency Medical Technician a basic High School Diploma is required.
• Following this, the training for an Emergency Medical Technician is offered at progressive levels from basic to paramedic.
• At the basic level, the medical technician is trained to handle cardiac, respiratory and trauma emergencies and also undertake basic patient assessment. The training focuses on treating bleeding, fractures, cardiac arrest, emergency child birth, etc.
• To qualify to practice, a candidate is required to appear and pass the examination held by the State licensing agency or the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT).
• At the subsequent level advanced training with airway devices, Intravenous fluids and medications is provided which comprises of about 350 hours of training.
• The final level of training is that of a Paramedic. It is a one to two year program which comprises of coursework along with clinical and field experience. Continued education is required for all levels of Emergency Medical Technicians.

Emergency Medical Technician is a job opportunity which is considered to grow faster than average, compared to all the other occupations, as per the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
