Geriatric psychiatry is a sub-specialty that integrates geriatric care and psychiatry. It focuses on the various physical problems associated with aging that affect the mind, like Parkinson’s disease, dementia, Alzheimer's disease and mood disorders.

Geriatric Psychiatrist Education and Training
• After completing your Bachelor’s degree; in order to become a geriatric psychiatrist, you have to finish Medical School. To gain admission in to Medical School, you need to maintain a high score in the undergraduate program.
• It may prove to be useful if you opt for a pre-med program at the high school level. Students who have Secondary School Education in physics, biology and chemistry are also eligible for medical schools. Entrance to a medical school is chiefly based on the performance at the undergraduate level and scores in the Medical College Admission Test.
• After that, you must take up a suitable Residency Program, i.e. once you complete Medical School; you have to complete an approved 4 year Residency Program in general psychiatry.
• Thereafter, you must finish accredited fellowship (1 year) in Geriatric Psychiatry.
• Following this, doctors obtain certification from the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology by appearing for an examination.
