Internist Job Description
Internists are doctors who concentrate on providing non surgical care for diseases and injuries affecting the internal organs of the body.
Internists focus on the overall health of the patient. They are trained specially to deal with the internal organs of the body: lungs, heart, stomach, liver, kidneys and intestines. They may act as primary care physicians / general practitioners for patients.
Internist Skills/Duties
An internist takes the patients' medical history, carries out physical examinations, diagnoses the disease, and recommends the treatment option. Internists may ask the patient to get certain investigations/diagnostic tests done and will interpret their results.
They may also refer their patients to specialists, if necessary.
Internists use a variety of treatment options to treat patients; with medication or hospitalization, depending on the disorder and the prognosis.
Internists may work in hospitals or have their own private practice. They may need to be on-call during specific shifts or come in to the hospital at odd hours to monitor or assess their patient.
Internist Education and Training
• If you want to become an internist, you will need to complete an undergraduate degree of 4 years, and then 4 years of Medical school. Undergraduates need to take courses in biology, physics, chemistry, english and mathematics.
• Medical School Admission Committees need practical experience, so you may want to volunteer at a hospital while an undergraduate.
• After Medical school, you need to put in between 3 to 8 years of internship and residency. Some universities grant an integrated undergrad and Medical school program; that students can complete in 6 years, as opposed to 8 years.
• You then apply for the license in the State where you will be practicing and pass the national exam.
Internist Job Outlook
Statistics say, job prospects are expected to rise faster than normal. Importantly, internists are opting to practice as a part of a group practice, health network or staff at a hospital / health clinic as opposed to going into private practice.
Internist Salary
The mean annual salary for internists is about $167,270. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, an internist can look forward to to earning $150,000 within the first years of practice. By time they have had 5 years of practice, they can expect to earn in the $230,000 salary range, depending on the specialty, experience, geographical site and the kind of facility in which they work.
