Medical Assistant Job Description
A Medical Assistant assists and works in collaboration with the Nurse and the Physician and performs a wide range of administrative and medical tasks. It is considered to be one of the most rapidly growing allied healthcare profession/career in the United States. Most frequently Medical Assistants work in the Doctors office or in the Out Patient units of hospitals. He always works under the supervision of a Physician.
A Medical Assistant is expected to perform various administrative duties like greeting patients, updating their files, answering phone calls, filling out insurance forms, scheduling appointment, arranging for hospital admission or laboratory investigations, book keeping, etc.
Some States allow Medical Assistants to take medical history, evaluate the vital signs, review the reports and investigations and also counsel the patient about treatments or procedures. Most of the Medical Assistants provide assistance for drug refills, taking electrocardiograms, removing sutures or changing dressing.
Medical Assistant Skills/Duties
A basic understanding of health and medicine is vital for a Medical Assistant. Understanding the basic anatomical functionality of the body and the functions of various treatment procedures and plans is important, especially for patient counseling.
In addition, a Medical Assistant needs to have a pleasant personality, strong communication skills, ability to handle stressful situations, etc.
The principle function of the assistant is administrative, and the Medical Assistant should be good with documentation and managing records and files.
Further, promptness to work and a pleasing personality are always required, especially when interfacing with the patients.
Medical Assistant Education and Training
A candidate needs to complete high school in order to become eligible for this education.
Two forms of educational programs are available which include a one year certificate program and a two year associate degree program for an accredited school or college. The course module comprises of medical terminologies, math, science, first aid, billing, record keeping, etc.
After completing the program, the Medical Assistant has to take a certification exam to become a Certified Medical Assistant. This certification is offered by the American Association of Medical Assistants and the certification must be renewed every five years.
Though some employees dont mandate a certificate, the job prospects of a Certified Medical Assistant are better.
Medical Assistant Job Outlook
Medical Assistants may be employed in hospitals or out patient settings of private doctors. The Medical Assistant normally works for 40 hours a week, but occasionally may be required to work on weekends or at night. As per the Bureau of Labor Statistics, it is the fastest growing profession through 2018, faster than any other occupation. The job potential is found to be excellent and with an ever increasing opportunity in profession.
Medical Assistant Salary
As per the American Medical Association, the salary range of a Medical Assistant would be about $ 22,000 to $30,000 per annum with additional benefits like health insurance. Further, the package may depend upon the experience and expertise, through there is little diversity in this profession.
