Medical Laboratory Technician Job Description

A Medical Laboratory Technician performs all complex medical tests meant for prevention, diagnosis and treatment of various disease and ailments. The Medical Laboratory Technician is trained to conduct chemical analysis of bodily fluids like urine, blood, spinal fluid, etc. It is the responsibility of the Laboratory Technician to ensure accuracy of the findings, enter clinical data, calibrate and maintain various laboratory equipments, run quality assurance tests and maintain the laboratory clean and sterile.

He also interacts with patients and their relatives to inform them about the test results, trains and supervises laboratory assistants and collects blood and other bodily material meant for the analysis.

Medical Laboratory Technician Skills/Duties

With regards to knowledge and expertise, a Medical Laboratory Technician needs to have a thorough knowledge of animal and plant organisms, cells, functions, interactions and interdependencies. Further, a Medical Laboratory Technician should have the knowledge of chemical composition, properties and structure of various substances regularly used in the laboratory.

Medical Laboratory Technician Education and Training

• A high school diploma is mandatory for any individual interested in pursing this career. Though, no specific training in high school is required, candidates with exposure to biology, chemistry, mathematics and computer science are preferred.

• After high school, the candidate needs to enroll for a two year training program organized by the Committee of Allied Health Education and Accreditation, a part of the American Medical Association. The program includes practical laboratory training along with classroom training.

• After completing the course, the candidate needs to apply for certification with the American Society of Clinical Pathology, the American Association of Bio analysts or the National Agency for Credentialing Laboratory Personnel.

• An additional two year program is available for those Medical Laboratory Technicians willing to specialize in the domains of blood bank or cytology.
