Orthopedic Surgeon Job Description
An orthopedic surgeon is a physician involved in the treatment and management of conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system of the body. An Orthopedic surgeon may use surgical or non surgical approach to treat and manage fractures, broken bones, infections, trauma patients, etc. The primary task of an orthopedic surgeon is to perform musculoskeletal restructuring.
The job entails patient management, performing physical examination and evaluating the condition of the patient, designing special treatment plans as per the patient’s needs and recording the progress of the patient.
The Orthopedic surgeon may use invasive or non invasive techniques and approach to treat fractures or other forms of bone injuries, cancer and malignant conditions of the skeletal system, deficiency disorders, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, rickets, etc.
Orthopedic Surgeon Skills/Duties
Most Orthopedic Surgeons are engaged in reconstructive surgery for the patients. Healing takes a relatively long time, especially in cases of post accident victims. An Orthopedic surgeon combines a medical treatment plan along with an exercise regimen to hasten the patient’s recovery process.
An Orthopedic Surgeon needs to work closely with Nurses, Physical Therapists, Orthopedist, etc to provide comprehensive services to the patients.
Furthermore, he has to have the inherent ability to work independently, especially in emergency situations. In addition to having the knowledge and skills relevant for his domain of expertise, he also requires other attributes like empathy, patience, precision and ability to interact with patient’s relatives, especially in cases of trauma or accidents. With constant advances in the domain of medical technology and increase volumes of research in the domain of improving patient care services, an Orthopedic Surgeon needs to be constantly updated and has to remain abreast of the latest breakthroughs.
Orthopedic Surgeon Education and Training
• After completing graduation, in a medical college, a candidate in order to become a qualified Orthopedic Surgeon needs to complete a three year residency, with department of Orthopedics of any major hospital.
• On completion of the residency, the candidate needs to appear for a National Board Examination which certifies and provides a license to practice orthopedic medicine.
Orthopedic Surgeon Job Outlook
As per the Department of Labor, about 3 % of all physicians specialize in the domain of Orthopedic Surgery. Further, more than half the numbers practice general orthopedics while a few specialize in the domains of spinal surgery, sports medicine, etc. As per estimates, this profession is in high demand and will continue to be in high demand for the next decade. With the increasing population base of the elderly population, which is most prone to musculoskeletal disorders, the growth prospects of this stream of surgery is bound to increase multifold in the future.
Orthopedic Surgeons are employed either in hospitals or they practice on their own. Invariably, most of the orthopedic surgeons set up their own practices and work either alone or in cooperative association with other doctors.

According to various surveys conducted by Salary.com, the average remuneration of an Orthopedic Surgeon in 2009 was about $405,448. This remuneration would also depend upon the settings, the location, the specific sub-specialty of practice and on the overall experience and skills possessed by the surgeon. Overall the salary remuneration was better than most of the other specialties of medicine and Surgery.
