Osteopathic Physician Job Description
An Osteopathic Physician is an individual practicing a healthcare system called ‘osteopathy’, which believes in the concept that overall health is related to the positions of the various structure of the human body. An Osteopathic Physician specializes in manipulative treatment therapy, using which; the physician moves the various muscles and bones into proper positions. This restructuring is believed to improve the overall health of the patient.
Just like a main stream physician, an Osteopathic Physician uses the same methods to diagnose and treat illness and injuries. The primary functions of Osteopathic Physicians are to prescribe medicines, perform various types of surgeries and recommend dietary corrections for the patients.
As per available information, about half the Osteopathic Physicians are family doctors and general practitioners. About 15 % of Osteopathic Physicians specialize in the domains of pediatrics, psychiatry, neurology, internal medicine and gynecology. • Alternatively, most students would earn a bachelor’s degree.
• Following this, the Osteopathic program is a four year program, similar to the training in medical schools. However, the emphasis is more on human anatomy and its functions along with their relationship of various body structures and its functions.
• Following completion of the program, an Osteopathic Physician, would spend one year internship in the osteopathic hospital, followed by residency to gain specialized training in any one specific department.
• The licensing requirements for Osteopathic Physicians vary from state to state. However after completing the course from an accredited osteopathic college, candidates need to pass the licensing examination.

The overall job prospects are very good. Most Osteopathic Physicians build their own practices while others function as teachers, administrators or researchers or participate in editing scientific books or journals.
All Osteopathic Physicians have the same privileges like medical doctors and many set up their own Osteopathic Hospitals or Clinics.
As per the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the demand for Osteopathic Physicians is projected to increase through 2014, faster than all the other occupations in the healthcare industry. There are very few Osteopathic Physicians that opt for salaried jobs in healthcare institutions, hospitals and teaching institutions.
