Paramedic Job Description
A paramedic is an emergency health care professional, in charge of taking care of patients in an accident / those in a high stress environment.
He will appraise the patient’s condition and conduct emergency procedures in the absence of a doctor, and move patients speedily and carefully to a nearby hospital or emergency department.
Paramedic Skills/Duties
A paramedic must have the basic expertise and know-how about the various emergency procedures, such as, CPR, first aid, medication administration, and minor surgical procedures, since; they carry out emergency procedures without the presence of a doctor on the field.
Paramedics or emergency medical technicians provide immediate help to victims of accidents or critical illnesses. They provide their services at the scene of the crisis, en route to the hospital; and in the emergency room.
Paramedics work ‘on-call’ and are summoned to the emergency site when required. They should be able to rapidly yet precisely find out the nature and extent of the problem and make a decision how it should be treated. In many cases, they treat the patient instantaneously if his life is to be saved.
They should be able to communicate well and should be able to adjust to change. A paramedic responds to emergency calls, evaluates the patient’s condition and gives preliminary treatment to steady the patient’s condition.
They work under the direction of a doctor, who is at the hospital, and communicates by way of a phone, and instructs the paramedic about a particular procedure which ought to be done and about drugs that need to be administered.
Once the patient’s condition stabilizes, the paramedic moves the patient to the hospital, where he informs the personnel of the emergency department. He also writes down the reports on the treatments that he administered, checks the equipment, re-stocks the supplies and waits for the next calls.
Paramedic Education and Training
• To become a paramedic, you have to receive training in the following subjects: Anatomy, Physiology and other science courses and health related courses
• You have to pass the emergency medical services (EMS) training at any paramedic school. In addition to class room training, you must have field training, so as to attain a ‘hands-on’ experience.
• The training consists of 3 levels, EMT: basic, transitional and advance phases of paramedical studies. The basic course is compulsory for everyone who wants to become a paramedic. Nearly all colleges / hospitals provide EMT basic training. After successfully completing EMT basic, you complete the intermediate level. You could skip this phase and proceed to the paramedic level. However, you must complete the required number of hours, before you become entitled for the advance program.
• After the training, you must complete 1 year of working experience in an ambulance setting.
• Training programs last for 18 to 24 months to complete.

• After that you have to pass the NREMT certification exam.
• To practice as a paramedic, you have to acquire a license that is recognized by the state.

Salaries of a paramedic range from $28,000 to $40,000 depending on the state in which they practice. Paramedics with good experience earn between $50,000 and $70,000 if they are working for a state agency or hospital.
