Psychiatrist Job Description
A Psychiatrist is a physician, who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders and conditions. A Psychiatrist treats a wide range of conditions which include anxiety disorders and panic attacks, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. The treatment can be on short term or long term basis depending upon the underlying condition of the patient.
A large portion of the Psychiatrist’s time goes into talking to clients and understanding their problems. A Psychiatrist identifies behavioral problems with his patients by exploring into their past experiences, old traumas and unresolved conflicts and grief.
Further, a Psychiatrist can prescribe drugs for treatment of clinical depression, post partum issues, bipolar disorders, etc.
In addition to interacting with the patients, a Psychiatrist spends considerable amount of his time, helping relatives, family and friends of the patient to help them cope up with the problem and develop patience and consideration for the affected patient.
Psychiatrist Skills/Duties
The most essential skill required by a Psychiatrist, is an ability to listen to patients problems. Based on the patients complains, the Psychiatrist categories the patients problems into developmental, emotional or behavioral and designs a treatment plan to manage the same.
A psychiatrist needs to have considerable amount of patience while interacting with the patients and also the ability to create a sense of comfort for the patient, to make him/her willing to share personal information.
A psychiatrist may need to interact with the same patient for prolonged periods of time and manage mental disorders without the use of medications.
Psychiatrists can specialize in select fields. Some may specialize in developmental psychology and focus on childhood and children’s lives; others may expertise in management of stress disorder and post traumatic stress syndrome, especially for military and army personnel. Some may expertise in forensic psychiatry and participate in criminal or civil cases while evaluating individuals with mental disorders.
Psychiatrist Education and Training
• A Psychiatrist is a specialized branch of medicine and hence an individual needs to first obtain a Bachelor’s degree after complete four years of medical school.
• Following this basic qualification, the candidate would have to complete one year of internship and three years of residency in the psychiatric department of a hospital.
Psychiatrist Job Outlook
Psychiatrists work in hospitals, clinics, mental institutions and also have their own private practice. Some of them may work as consultants to law offices and correctional institutions. Many work in medical schools, and are involved in training and research.
Psychiatrists play an important role in research and publications as they investigate numerous issues and cases pertaining to mental disorders and criminal activities. They play a critical role in ensuring a healthy and smooth functioning society.
