Rehabilitation Counselor Job Description
Rehabilitation counselors provide support and help to patients who have mental or physical disabilities, and to those recuperating from a severe injury / disease.
Rehabilitation counselors counsel handicapped people to give them vocational rehabilitation services. They will interview and evaluate the handicapped applicants, and will consult medical personnel to establish the kind and degree of handicap, eligibility for service, and viability of the occupational rehabilitation.
Rehabilitation Counselor Skills/ Duties
A rehabilitation counselor assists disabled, ill and injured patients. He makes them understand the difficulties and hurdles surrounding their condition. The objective of a counselor is helping the patients in the development of skills so that they can enter the labor force and also take care for their psychological well-being.
He will find out and determine suitable jobs that are in keeping with applicant's aptitudes, skills, desires and physical and emotional restrictions. He plans and arranges for the client to train / learn for the specified job.
He will assist the client with adjustment / acclimatization throughout the program. He encourages and develops employment openings for qualified applicants.
A rehabilitation counselor may focus on a particular kind of disability, like, mental disorders, hearing / visual impairment, alcohol abuse, drug abuse, or re-adjustment after prison release.
They work synergistically with physiotherapists, occupational and speech therapists, physicians and psychologists, to make the overall treatment plan successful.
The counselor also works with the patient's relatives to offer assistance to the patient.
Typically, a counselor works 40 hours a week.
Rehabilitation Counselor Education and Training
• A rehabilitation counselor needs a Graduate Master’s Degree (2 to 4 years program) in counseling / psychology.
• Some counselors study for 4 to 8 years of graduate school, eventually attaining a Doctorate Degree.
• You must also pass a written exam and work for stipulated number of supervised hours to get the license required to work independently.
• In addition, the Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification provides a certificate, and some states command for this certification in addition to the license.

The job outlook and employment prospect for rehabilitation counselors looks really good. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics has projected that the requirement for rehabilitation counselors is bound to increase by 23 % through 2016, thus, creating approximately 32,000 jobs.
