Toxicologist Job Description
A toxicologist is a professional who inspects and studies the effects and the perils of various chemicals, toxins and substances on human beings and animals. He also studies their detrimental effects on the environment.
Toxicologists, by and large, work in laboratories to conduct experiments/tests/trials and infer readings.
Toxicologist Skills/Duties
Toxicologists examine and investigate various kinds of poisons and toxins. They take samples of chemicals from plants, animals, different minerals, and send them to the laboratory for assessment.
They design proposals regarding tests and experiments, to observe and reveal the effects of the samples to the animals, and calculate the effects on these on the human body. After a sanction of the proposal, the samples are ready for the actual experimentation.
Every arrangement is monitored and every inspection/result is recorded. After several repetitions of the trial, the toxicologist draws conclusions and suggests recommendations.
They also study and research various anti-dotes for the toxins that are studied. This work entails health risks. Thus, they cautiously take on the study and effectively protect themselves.
Methodological skills are seen in the efficiency and smoothness of work with the use of laboratory equipment and devices.
They also conduct tests to determine the poisonous effects of cosmetic ingredients and constituents on laboratory animals for manufacturers of cosmetics. They apply the constituent to the exposed skin of the test animal and observe the skin from time to time to check for the probable occurrence of inflammation, irritation or abnormalities. They inject the ingredient in to the test animal, using a needle, and look for signs of toxicity. They inject antidotes as well to establish which antidote neutralizes the toxic effects best.
They test and analyze serum samples for the presence of toxicity, using laboratory test equipments. Importantly, they prepare reports of all the test results.
Forensic toxicologists function as a component of an investigation team of a crime scene, and carry out tests on body fluids and tissue samples to discover the presence of any chemicals / chemicals in the body, that may have had a say in the crime.
Toxicologist Education and Training
• To become a toxicologist, you must have a Bachelor's degree in chemistry, clinical chemistry, pharmacology or another scientific field.
• Further education is a 2 year Masters Degree. The post graduate degree should focus on pharmacology, environmental science, molecular biology and bio-chemistry.
• A Doctorate degree (PhD) is encouraged after several months of hands-on training.
• Professionals with several years of practical experience can attain certification from The American Board of Forensic Toxicology, The American Board of Clinical Chemistry and The American Board of Toxicology.
Toxicologist Job Outlook
The Bureau of Labor Statistics says that there will be a demand for toxicologists, more so, the forensic occupations. Toxicologists can focus on various domains, like, veterinary, risk assessment and forensics. They may be employed either indoors or for field work to collect samples. Government owned organizations and research institutes offer jobs.
Toxicologist Salary
The salary of a toxicologist ranges from $35,000 to $60,000 annually.
