Computer Science Graduate Resume
|
Recent graduates are usually unfamiliar with creating a resume that can communicate their skills and abilities to potential employers. Without taking the time and effort to create a great resume, individuals will not be as successful as they possibly could be when it comes to finding a job that takes advantage of their computer science degree. A computer science graduate resume is the first thing a recent graduate should put their effort into when it comes to searching for a job. While each resume needs to be different, there are some common things that can be included in a computer science graduate resume.
Education
In the absence of professional work experience, education is the most important thing to highlight on your computer science graduate resume. You should list your degree, which will be Computer Science, along with any other minor degrees you have earned during your time in college. It can be a good idea to include examples of some of your classes along with descriptions about the kinds of material they covered if they are specifically relevant to the position you are applying for. Examples of classes you could mention in this section include, Software Design and Data Structures, Programming Languages, Operating Systems, Data Structures and Algorithms, Exploration of the Digital Future, and other courses of that nature.
Specific Areas of Study
A lot of colleges that have Departments of Computer Science will offer different tracks of study. Regardless of the track selected, the individual will still graduate with a degree in Computer Science; however, different graduates will have more in-depth knowledge about certain areas. You should include your specific field of study in your computer science graduate resume. Examples include Human-Computer Interaction Tracks, Knowledge, Information and Data Tracks, Media-Creative Computing Tracks, Scientific Computing, and Systems and Networking.
Research / Teaching Positions
Most potential employers will not expect to see professional working experience on a recent graduate’s resume. Instead, there are other ways students can gain some experience in the field that they will be working in after graduation. If you worked on your own research project, or assisted a professor with a research project, you should list the title of the research, your role in the project, and any important findings, achievements, or publication that came from the results. Additionally, anyone who worked as a Teaching Assistance or TA should include information about the course they assisted on, their responsibilities, and any other relevant experience that resulted from the assistantship.
Some recent graduates like to include more personal information in their resumes. If you were involved in a lot of extracurricular activities then try to limit the items that you are including to ones that are relevant to the position, showed leadership experience, or are particularly impressive on their own. Obviously, if you were the President of the Computer Science club you should mention it on your resume. Alternatively, if you played on an Ultimate Frisbee League, you might want to reconsider including that. Another tip, if you want help formatting your resume you can search for computer science graduate resume samples or templates online.
