Computers Resume
|
Within the past decade computer technology has become a highly specialized field. As a result, writing a computer resume to get a position in the field should be as specific as possible regarding the area of work being sought. For instance, a computer programmer resume would follow the same basic format as a computer repair technician resume, but the content would be completely unique in each case. The first, and most important, thing to be aware of when writing a computer resume is to be as detailed and job oriented as possible throughout.
Computer Resume Objective Statement
After the basic contact information on a resume, the first part of the body will be an objective statement. This is the area where one or two sentences highlight exactly what a job applicant is looking for, and will serve to excite the reviewer’s interest in the candidate. An example objective statement for a computer repair technician might say something to the effect of, “To utilize my expertise in problem solving when repairing mainframe systems for networks.” That one sentence just told a potential employer that the candidate is a computer repair technician who specializes in networks, and the individual has expert problem solving skills.
Computer Resume Summary of Qualifications
In the Summary of Qualifications area of the computer resume, the applicant’s areas of proficiency should be highlighted in points. Keep each point short while highlighting qualifications. For example:
• Ability to quickly analyze and repair WAN, LAN and Network Mainframes
• Knowledgeable in Win NT/2000/XP/Vista/Win7, Linux, Unix, Apple
• Communicate well with clients; Instruct them in updates and repairs
Several more qualifications and/or skills may be mentioned, but that is an idea of what the formatting would look like. Also, many resume samples don’t use bullet points, but rather just itemize the qualifications in list format. Either format is acceptable.
The Professional Experience Area of a Computer Resume
In this area of the resume, previous employment is listed in reverse chronological order, starting with the most recent job in computers. Although there may have been other types of employment within the last five to ten years, it is essential to try to list only work pertinent to the job being applied for. The exception to this rule would be if the applicant is new to the field of computers, perhaps a recent college graduate, or if the job being listed had features that would relate to the position being sought. For instance, in the qualifications area the applicant listed communication and instructional skills. If previous employment utilized those particular skills, by all means list it.
Responsibilities in a Computer Resume
Again, relying on the example of a resume for a computer technician, the applicant might list such things as being responsible for all service calls to the NYC Department of Transportation, Albany office, for their mainframe network. Perhaps the applicant was a crew leader responsible for sending techs to various locations to repair intra-office networks for a real estate group. This area should be formatted in much the same way as the qualifications portion, with short bullet points or itemized details. Keep this information pertinent to the job being sought and avoid responsibilities that have nothing whatsoever to do with the field of computers or analysis and repair.
Education and Training
When it comes to being certified in the field of computers, there is a wide assortment of degrees and training programs that would qualify an applicant for a position in the field. From two year vocational schools to community colleges, universities and graduate schools, computer training is, again, a highly specialized field. While a repair technician who simply repairs hardware might only need certification from a technical school, a computer programmer might need a Master’s Degree or PhD in Computer Science. Educational requirements are specific to the job being applied for, along with the particular requirements of the potential employer.
There are samples of computer resumes on this site which can be referred to when formatting one for a job in the field. A professionally compiled computer resume that makes use of all the key techniques is the first step in getting a job, but a poorly crafted resume can do more harm than good.
