Construction Resume

Anyone interested in finding a great construction job needs to start their job search off correctly by establishing a quality resume that can highlight skills and abilities. Great resumes can give potential employers an idea of what kind of employee you would be, and lets them know why they should consider hiring your for the open position. You should consider putting a considerable amount of effort into creating a construction resume. The initial effort you put into creating a resume will pay off once you have been hired for the construction position you want.
Previous Work Experience
This section of your construction resume is incredibly important to potential employers. Any construction company looking to hire individuals for an open position will want to see that the applicants for the job have worked in that area in the past and are familiar with the kinds of tasks the job will require of the employee who fills it. Examples of jobs that could be included in this section are more hands on positions such as carpentry, electrical wiring, and insulation positions or more professional positions such as Site Foreman, Design Specialist, Demolition Expert, Cement Mason, or any field which qualifies you as a Master Craftsman.
Education and Training
Some construction positions require the individuals in the position to have certain background training or education to qualify them for that job such as an electrician, who would need to be certified. If this is the kind of job that you are applying for it is necessary to include the relevant information in this section of your resume. You should list and provide a short but detailed description of whatever education or training programs you have completed. You can also include any apprenticeship or journeyman programs you have been involved with, or have completed, at this point.
Areas of Expertise
There are a lot of different areas that individuals in the construction business can specialize in. For instance, if you have particular experience working with “green” building materials or eco-friendly building techniques, this is the best section of your construction resume to mention that information. Make sure that you are only including information in this section that is either incredibly impressive, or unique on its own, or information that is relevant to the position that you are applying for. You can also specify which construction sector you typically work in, building construction, heavy/civil construction, and/or industrial construction.
Special Skills / Abilities
This section of your construction resume should be an extension of the “areas of expertise” section of your resume and should be used to help set you apart from other candidates for the same position in the eyes of the employer. You should include the unique or special skills and abilities that you have either learned or develop during your construction career. For instance, if there is a particular skill associated with some aspect of using “green” building materials, such as using newspaper as an alternative form of insulation, you should mention that in this section.
Just as each individual is different, each resume should be different. Make sure that you are building your resume for the specific position that you are applying for, and only include information that will impress employers and convince them that you are the best candidate for this particular job.
