Driver Resume

There are literally thousands of different types of driving jobs and each one is likely to require specific skills and licensing pertinent to the specific company or organization employing the driver. However, there is one common thread in all driving jobs which would be the requirement to possess a commercial class state driver’s license, often referred to as a CDL, or Commercial Driver’s License. A driver resume to procure employment may need to list qualifications above and beyond the bare minimum state issued CDL.
Driver Resume – Objective Statement
This is the first area that may need to focus on specifics of a driving job. For instance, an applicant as a school bus driver might have an objective statement that reads, “To obtain a part time position as a licensed commercial class driver that enables me to be home in the summer breaks with my family.” However, a long-haul semi driver may state the objective as, “To utilize my driving skills on cross country transit of hazardous materials meeting HAZMAT guidelines.”
Driver Resume – Qualifications and Skills
Although it is a given that a commercial driver holds a CDL, it isn’t necessary to list that quite yet. This area is for special skills and qualifications that qualify the applicant for a specific driving job. For instance, a truck driver might list the ability to drive long hauls and is versed in inventory control paperwork. Another driver seeking a position as a cab driver in NYC might list being familiar with all the Burroughs and routes to and from Kennedy Airport and the City. Each type of driver resume would list skills pertinent to the position being sought.
Professional Experience for a Driver Resume
Driving jobs should be listed beginning with the current, or most recent job, and then listed in reverse chronological order from there. After each job, specific duties should be listed prior to listing the next job. An example of responsibilities might be keeping up with HAZMAT updates, planning safe transport routes to avoid highly populated areas, and safe loading and unloading of toxic or lethal chemicals/hazardous materials. Highlight important duties as they pertained to each job. And, of course, it is only necessary to list jobs pertinent to the position being applied for.
Educational Requirements for a Driver Resume
While many driving jobs are open to drivers holding a CDL in that state, many jobs require specialized training above and beyond the required coursework that is a prerequisite of obtaining a commercial license. Of course the school where commercial driving course was taken should be listed, but other pertinent studies should be listed under education as well. For instance, many ambulance drivers are also required to be paramedics in many states or hospitals. Also, that long haul driver who transports dangerous substances must be certified by HAZMAT per federal legislation.
