Employment Resume
|
When seeking a job, the first order of business should be to prepare a resume highlighting skills, qualifications, employment experience and education that would make a candidate eligible for a position being sought. However, it is important to understand the purpose of a resume. The resume does not get a person the job, the actual employment application and subsequent interview land the job, the resume only gets the attention of the employment office. The sole intent of a resume is to highlight qualities you can bring to a potential employer in as few words as possible. An employment resume gives job seekers approximately thirty seconds to sell themselves in order to be awarded an interview, because more often than not, that is the length of time the reviewer will spend looking at it.
Employment Resume – Objective Statement
Understanding that the person reviewing your resume only spends moments looking at it gives you an advantage from a marketing perspective. Think of a resume as a page of sales copy and the objective statement would then be your personal slogan. Use this opening line to grab the attention and interest of the person reviewing the resume. Effective use of buzz words is always to your advantage. For instance, if applying for a position as a music teacher in a local high school, the opening statement might read, “Seeking a position utilizing my talents as a musician recently graduated from Julliard School of Music, while working with young people to inspire them to express themselves appropriately through song.”
Employment Resume – Qualifications and Skills
On this portion of the resume individuals seeking a job will emphasize skills and qualifications that will make them desirable candidates for the position in question. Again, the reviewer is only going to glance at this resume so each item should be a strong selling point, short and to the point, and can be listed with or without bullet points. Skills and qualifications may be personality traits as opposed to skills learned as a result of training or work experience. Drawing on the example of the music teacher applicant, skills might include such things as having the ability to communicate well with teenagers or as being well versed in the pop music culture.
Professional Experience for an Employment Resume
Most resumes are formatted in reverse chronological order. This means that any prior work experience would be listed with the current or most recent employment first, and then listed backwards from there. The place of employment and position are accompanied by dates of employment and the location of the place of employment. When the job is referring to employment within the United States, it is most common to see only the city and state listed here. For jobs that were held in other countries, typically the city and country are listed. Immediately following each job, the applicant will list specific duties and responsibilities that were part of the job description. A receptionist might list duties such as answering phones, scheduling appointments, taking messages, contacting clients for reminders of upcoming appointments and things of that nature.
Educational Requirements for an Employment Resume
Each and every job has different educational requirements, so every resume will reflect this. A job seeker looking to be employed as a nuclear physicist may need a PhD, where a food server may only need a high school diploma and/or proof of certification in safe food handling. As in the professional experience portion of the resume, all education is listed with the highest level of education being cited first, with all subsequent degrees and certifications listed in reverse order. The name and location of the school, degree achieved and dates of attendance are documented. In most cases, contrary to popular belief, it is difficult to be ‘over qualified’ as virtually every job has hundreds of applicants. List all education pertinent to the job being sought after.
The thing to remember about an employment resume is that it doesn’t get you the job 99.99% of the time. What a well crafted resume will provide is an interview, and an opportunity to submit an application. With this in mind, it is so important to prepare a great resume, no matter what type of employment is being sought.
