Engineer Resume
|
An engineer seeking employment would need to be very specific from the very beginning of an engineer resume as to what type of engineering he or she is qualified for. There are a number of fields of engineering from mechanical to sustainability design right through to aeronautical and agricultural. Being an engineer in one field will not necessarily qualify a candidate to hold a position in another field, and as some corporations employ engineers across a broad spectrum of disciplines, it is vitally important to differentiate right from the very beginning of the resume.
Engineer Resume – Objective Statement
While the cover letter that accompanies a resume will probably mention the field of engineering that a job seeker is interested in, the first place on the actual resume to document this would be the objective statement. Immediately following the contact information, a candidate has one or two lines to state the purpose of submitting the resume. A mechanical engineer might say something along the lines of “Highly skilled mechanical engineer seeking position in prototype, research and development.” On the other hand, a candidate seeking employment in sustainable design might say, “To find a position on a team focused on building residential communities that are not dependent on fossil fuel for energy needs.”
Engineer Resume – Qualifications and Skills
Qualifications and skills on an engineer resume will not always be the same from one field of engineering to the next; however, there are some skills that most engineers have in common. Engineering is a very precise occupation that is dependent on the candidate being organized and efficient in time or project management. Those would be ideal qualifications to list on any engineer resume. Also, such skills as being proficient in CAD software and MS Project would be a key selling point. Even though these skills may not be integral to a degree in engineering, they are certainly a plus in the desirability of one candidate over the next.
Professional Experience for an Engineer Resume
Unless an individual seeking employment is a recent graduate, this is where all previous employment in the field of engineering would be listed. Professional experience is listed in reverse chronological order from the current/most recent position backwards over the previous five to ten years in most cases. Many times that is a sufficient amount of work history to document as it is often difficult to verify employment any further back than that. The company, dates of employment and position held are listed first, with job responsibilities listen immediately under each job. For example, after listing employment at Boeing in Seattle, Washington, the mechanical engineering candidate might cite such responsibilities as being in charge of a team responsible for designing housing for wiring in the cockpit, and throughout the cabin. Any duties specifically assigned to the job description are detailed here, usually in list or bulleted list format.
Educational Requirements for an Engineer Resume
Although it is possible to gain employment as an entry level engineer with a Bachelor’s Degree in Science, B.S., engineering is a highly technological field and highly competitive. As a result, most employers often require a Master’s Degree in the field of engineering the candidate is applying for a position in. Education is listed from the highest degree obtained, backwards to high school. Any educational awards and accolades can also be listed here along with GPA if desired. Often job seekers who were outstanding students and excelled in their academic career wish to emphasize the fact that they graduated magna cum laude or with continued presence on the President’s List. Specialized areas of research and internship can also be cited if appropriate.
Because an engineer resume will vie for the attention of the reviewer with potentially hundreds of other resumes, it is of vital importance to craft the perfect document. There are engineer resume samples online, in every field of engineering, which can guide earnest job seekers in methods of formatting their resumes for highest results.
