Extra Help With Using Sample Resumes
|
Locating a sample resume is one thing, but knowing how to fill in the information to create a professional and effective resume for your needs is quite another. You can find millions of sample resumes on the internet, but the personality is missing in a sample resume. It is up to you to add the personality, the punch, to bring the resume to life in order to help you obtain a job. While a sample resume is a great starting point it is up to you to make it into an attention grabber so that you can land an interview and eventually a job.
Just a bit of extra help can make the difference between a bland, boring resume and a sparkling example of your skills and what you have to offer. Much like filling out applications, you may feel as if you’ve phrased your job history a hundred different ways before you get your resume the way it should be to get a potential employers attention and get you a job.
Don’t get frustrated, just use the simple extra help points to make your sample resume more personalized.
• Promote your abilities and skills near the top of the first page of the resume. Much like newspapers and websites sell advertising space “above the fold” you want employers to see your selling points immediately.
• Keep it clean. A resume does not need a bunch of filler or fluff. Stick to the facts, present your abilities, skills and experience succinctly and professionally. A potential employer doesn’t need to know that you were head cheerleader 5 years ago unless you are applying to be a cheerleader or a cheer coach. Leave out useless information.
• Choose professional terms to improve the way a potential employer will evaluate and compare your skills to other applicants. The right terminology and wording can make all the difference.
For example, instead of saying you worked on a project with someone, state that you collaborated on such and such project. Some other words to work into your resume include executed instead of completed, generated instead of produced, reconciled instead of resolved and surpassed instead of improved upon.
• Address the needs of the company to show that you’ve done your research, show through your goals and objectives that you can answer these issues. This is a matter of not only telling the employer what you have to offer, but that you are aware that some of the needs of the company may need additional attention and you are prepared to give it.
These few pieces of advice can make or break your resume, so don’t assume that just because you are using a sample resume that all the work is done for you, it isn’t. It is up to you to make the resume represent you, not just use the right layout and show experience.
In today’s tough job market, taking the time to create a really top notch resume can make the difference between getting a job and staying unemployed. Don’t let your employment goals slip away over something as easy as a resume.
