Film Resume
|
Once a person becomes involved in the exciting opportunities the film industries have to offer, it will be extremely difficult to turn away. This field has a wide array of professions from director, to producer, to the ever popular actor that will always be in high demand. However, landing one of these is not an easy task as the competition is fierce. When seeking an entry level position in the film industry, it is crucial to come prepared with a well planned resume that reflects particular goals and qualifications within the desired film niche.
Film Resume – Objective Statement
This should be a short statement used to sum up the applicant’s desired occupation within the film industry. While a hopeful actor’s objective statement may reflect his or her desire to play a part in a motion picture, a film director will describe a desire to work on the creation of great films. The objective statement should only be a sentence or two, but should contain a particular emphasis on the exact position being applied for, and it should be written in such a way as to capture the attention of the reviewer. “Experienced actor with an impressive list of television roles seeking a part in the upcoming motion picture adaptation of Steven King’s latest novel.”
Film Resume – Qualifications and Skills
Qualification and skills will vary from person to person, and with the position being sought. For instance, should an actor be seeking a role in an upcoming film, that person would focus on skills involving acting along with his or her physical appearance and/or vocal talent as this is a large factor when choosing the right person for the role. However, while acting skills may look nice on a director’s list, it is entirely unnecessary, and in most cases completely irrelevant. A director might have great leadership skills and an ability to work well with temperamental actors. These qualifications may, or may not, be the result of studies or experience; they may simply be inherent to that applicant’s basic personality traits.
Professional Experience for a Film Resume
Listed in reverse chronological order, the applicant should detail previous work experience that relates specifically to his or her particular niche within the film industry. For instance, an actor would list roles he or she played, the name of the producer, the film or play, and the dates it ran. A director would do much the same thing. These are cited in reverse chronological order, and certain jobs would require a list of responsibilities after each job. For instance, an actor would most likely only need to list the role as described above, but the director might need to list specific responsibilities other than directing the film. Responsibilities might include being present at casting calls, overseeing set locations and communicating needs to stylists, make-up artists and any other duties associated with the production in question.
Education Requirements for a Film Resume
The educational requirements for a job within the film industry would be specific to the position being sought. An actor may not need to have graduated from a school of the performing arts, while a director may need a Master’s degree in cinematography. Most photographers and grip operators and positions of that nature have at least an Associate’s in Arts. Only education pertinent to the industry really needs to be listed here. For example, an actor who has a Master’s degree in biochemistry wouldn’t necessarily list that on a resume to be considered for a supporting role in a Steven King thriller. Any relevant education should be listed with the highest degree first along with the name of the educational institute, the location, coursework and dates of attendance. Work backwards from there, as far back as high school.
Each position in the film industry will require content on the resume that is specific to that occupation; however, the format remains the same. Film resume samples can be found online to help serious individuals format a resume designed to get results.
