When submitting a finance resume, it is essential to make it clear from the cover letter and objective statement what kind of job is being sought. This is a field that is so extensive that there is almost an infinite number of positions, and variations of those positions, in the private, business and government sectors of the world of finance. Although this field generally requires a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in any professional position, there are some areas that may require only a high school diploma. A person seeking employment is always encouraged to give considerable thought to the objective statement. It is never sufficient to say “Seeking a job as a teller in Wachovia Bank,” when looking for that type of position. Instead, that applicant might say, “Looking to use my skills in customer service to obtain an entry level position as a teller in one of the nation’s leading financial institutions.” That statement just implied that the candidate is a people person, can avoid conflicts and has just called Wachovia Bank one of the leading banks in the country. It also tells the person reviewing the resume that this job candidate is also motivated and looking for upward mobility with the use of the keywords, ‘entry level.’

Finance Resume – Qualifications and Skills

Certain skills are almost synonymous with the word finance. Any job seeker looking for work in finance should always be proficient in math, have a good working knowledge of computers and office machinery, and of course, should be well organized and detail oriented. Also, desirable qualifications would be to cite being excellent at time management and multi-tasking. When it comes to money, the slightest diversion can lead to a huge error. Employers want to know that anyone handling money can stay focused on the task at hand while handling other peripheral situations as they arise.

Professional Experience for a Finance Resume

Again, because the field is so all encompassing, there will be varying levels of experience required for each position in finance. A mortgage broker, according to law in most states, must have at least one year of experience prior to qualifying for a license as a broker, while a bank clerk may be fresh out of high school. Once it has been determined what the company and/or the law requires in terms of work experience, and that those requirements have been met, it is time to start listing work history on the finance resume. Begin with the current or most recent job and work backwards over the past five to ten years. Each job should be immediately followed by tasks specific to that place of employment. A bank teller might list taking deposits, cashing checks and things of that nature, while a loan officer would list taking applications for loans, verifying income and assets, and other duties that are integral to the loan process.

Education Requirements for a Finance Resume

While it is extremely difficult to predict what level of education may be required, a good rule of thumb would be to look at each job in terms of responsibility. Each ‘level’ within the world of finance carries more responsibility than levels lower down the corporate ladder. As a consequence, a mortgage broker may only need a 500 hour course in mortgage brokering while a financial analyst may need a PhD in finance. List all degrees and/or certificates from the highest level of education back through to secondary education. Provide the names of the schools, the degree earned, the dates attended and the location of the campus attended. Any special awards and citations can also be mentioned here if pertinent to finance or the person’s moral character.
