The rising costs of university and college has made it more difficult for students to pursue higher education. Different cultural groups have been particularly disadvantaged when it comes to the increase costs of post-secondary education, most notably African Americans. Today, African American student grants are available to ease the financial strain and help students reach their educational goals.

How Student Grants help

Over the past few years, a number of African American student grants have become available to help students bare the costs of higher education. Many students accept student loans in order to finish school, but graduate with a very large financial burden that they need to repay. Grants, however, are an award that never needs to be repaid and are intended to be a helping hand for students. Since grants for African American students have become available, enrollment in post-secondary education by black students is now at an all time high.

College and University Support

Support for African American students has come from thirty-nine universities and colleges in the U.S. which have been known as historically black schools. This has provided a very strong network for these students to complete their post-secondary education. Most of these schools offer their own awards to help students achieve their goals. Some colleges, such as Spelman College in Atlanta, are designed specifically for African American women and offer awards specifically for them. All of these colleges are intended to encourage black student s to continue with their education and offer a variety of African American student grants in order for them to do so.

United Negro College Fund

The United Negro College Fund (UNCF) was founded in 1944 and has continued to help African Americans to achieve their educational goals. The UNCF also helps to fund the historically black colleges that continue to operate throughout the US. In addition, they distribute African American student grants to help students deal with the financial burden of college or university. The UNCF’s slogan, “A Mind is a Terrible Thing to Waste” is an iconic slogan which embodies the principle by which they operate. The UNCF is primarily responsible for improving the under-education which had plagued African American communities in the past.

Private Grants

There are also African American student grants which are made available through private companies and institutions which are awarded every year. There are specific awards that are offered from private agencies for black students, such as the National Black Nurses Association, which is trying to encourage more African American students to pursue nursing. In addition to charities and foundations, private companies are starting to offer grants which are aimed at increasing diversity within the workplace. The best place to find more information about what is currently available is through a financial aid office at any college or university.

These awards for African American students, as well as the other grants which are available to all students, are designed to ease the financial burden of post-secondary education. They have helped to dramatically improve the education of black students in America.
