The cost of higher education is expensive, not only to the student but to their families and extended support network. Very often students choose specialist courses, which require them to travel and live away from home for college, which incurs living expenses along with travel and other costs. Luckily, funding does exist in the form of financial aid, scholarships and college fellowships.
Different Criteria
The criteria for applying for a scholarship versus fellowships differs, and those differences usually depend on the foundation or organization giving the financial help. A fellowship is a much broader provision, which usually involves scholarships as part of its entitlement, and is usually awarded based on academic achievement. It is also paid regularly over a predetermined amount of time where the scholarship is paid all at once.
Furthering the Cause
The fellowship is also awarded so that the recipient can work towards a specific goal or purpose with their research that will further the cause and vision of the foundation giving the fellowship. This work might include clinical work at a hospital, teaching at college and other practical work within their field. Very often, this practical work will count towards a higher qualification such as a specialist qualification.
Differences between Fellowships and Scholarships
A scholarship provides for a four year degree with full expenses paid, particularly with sports scholarships. Some scholarships are awarded for only a semester of study, however these are rare. Scholarships are determined by financial need or academic merits such as GPA scores. Fellowships are awarded for a specific amount of time with specified academic, research, and field study or internship goals set out for the recipient to achieve within that timeframe. Fellowships are paid out in increments.

There is a wide range of college fellowships on offer within the United States. Each foundation has its own reasons for offering a fellowship program. The Ford Foundation Fellowship Program exists to “increase the ethnic and racial diversity…and maximize the educational benefits of diversity.” Any United States citizen of any race aiming to teach or research at college or university level may apply.
Giving Back Where There is Need
Other fellowship programs such as the U.S. Schweitzer Fellows Program focus on specific areas of education, in this case, the top human service and health schools, and recipients are chosen by their academic achievements. Called “The Schweitzer fellows,” the recipients get involved with community groups, and must identify an unmet health problem and implement a project from beginning to end to meet that need.
Supporting Increase Qualifications
The NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program supports graduate students carrying out research at the Master’s or PhD level within their stated vision. The recipients are headed for the top of their fields in science and engineering research and very often NSF Fellows are responsible for research that breaks new ground in these industries. The heart of this fellowship is “to help ensure the vitality and diversity of the scientific and engineering workforce in the United States.”
Along with college fellowships, fellowships exist in many areas, including white house fellowships where recipients work in the white house for a year, and congressional fellowships. Fellowships play a vital role in encouraging research and cutting edge discoveries in different fields, which recipients would otherwise be financially unable to fund. In addition, they encourage continual growth within an industry while acknowledging the best and brightest within a field.
