Article on Education Fellowships
Any society with a goal of increasing the wealth and quality of life for its community is reliant upon education. Education opens the doors for people to step into all kinds of professions and vocations. Earning a qualification of some description outside of high school immediately boosts income-earning potential and as a result, the standard of living will improve for that family.
An Expensive Business
However, education is a costly thing. For postgraduate studies, research is usually required over a substantial period of time, sometimes a minimum of a year ranging to several years depending on the field of study and breadth of the project. There are not many who can afford to take a year of unpaid leave and so the necessity of education fellowships to assist those heading for higher qualifications such as master’s and doctorate degrees is great.
Nurturing the Entrepreneurs
Education itself as a profession and an industry has a high demand for new and improved techniques for the educators and sharp minds to tackle the challenges and problems facing many schools. As a result, one specific education fellowship was born, called The Education Entrepreneur Fellowship. It exists nationally and is “designed to develop and nurture innovative strategies for taking on our greatest challenges in education.”
Substantial Financial Support
The funding provided through this fellowship amounts to two years paid salary plus travel funding. This level of financial support means the recipients of this fellowship are in a unique position to develop their entrepreneurial ideas regarding education. Eligibility for the fellowship depends very much on the drive and personal passion the applicant has for education, for solving problems and removing obstacles preventing people from an equal opportunity for a good education.
Value from Mentorship
Perhaps most valuable of all is the mentorship a fellow receives when awarded one of the education fellowships. In the case of the education entrepreneur fellowship, it may be a local government leader, or an experienced or senior businessperson, who has contacts to help facilitate the recipient’s research and ideals. These leaders are themselves passionate about seeing change in the public education system.
Funding Master’s and Doctorate Degrees
The Javit Fellowship by the Department of Education is another source of education fellowships. Qualification is based on several factors such as outstanding academic achievement, showing a lot of potential and of course financial need. The purpose is to fund either a Master’s or a PhD in fine arts, which includes the humanities and social sciences in addition to the arts. Recipients receive either four years of funding, or the funding to pay for their degree.
Getting Out in the World
An Earthwatch Educator Fellowship funds educators in the classroom to get out in the field, hone their professional skills and learn about conservation efforts and the latest research. Desired applicants are those that are passionate about teaching and about bringing the outside world into the classroom. They are passionate people, curious and able to inspire others.
This fellowship pays for the expenses of the project or expedition and all of the associated costs of housing, research and meals, but excludes traveling costs. Education Fellowships offer those who are passionate to learn the opportunity to increase their knowledge, and the funding and support they need to do so effectively.
There are many other fellowships available, get in contact with your chosen college or university learn more about the opportunities available to you. Additionally, have a search around this website for some more information on the various fellowships and other methods of financial aid.
