Engineering Student Grants

Article on Engineering Student Grants
The U.S. government has recognized publicly that this country needs to focus on remaining competitive with the international community in the area of science. Engineering is one of the most competitive areas of study in science, and at any college. Studying and working to maintain a good grade point average is probably enough for most engineering students to worry about. One type of anxiety can be cleared away by planning and searching in advance for engineering student grants. This field is always looking for talented, innovative people to join its ranks – but first you need to get through school.
FAFSA
Once the student has narrowed down his or her choice of university, the next step is to fill out the FAFSA (federal student aid form). Non-government grantors will also require that this form be filled out, before a student can apply for their grant. If the student would like a ‘scratch paper’ version of the form plus some extra college and grant planning tools, fafsa4caster.ed.gov is a great place to begin. All the student information can be saved and changed later if necessary – if a new school is chosen or financial information changes. This web site will provide an estimate of the financial aid, including grants, available from the federal and state government based on the student’s circumstances as entered into the online tool.
Who Should Apply
Engineering student grants can be awarded based on a number of factors, often including financial need. Engineering school can be very expensive, and a student need not be living in poverty in order to qualify for grant funds. Most grants from colleges and universities are awarded to as diverse a group of students as possible, including minorities, adult students and returning students. One minority in particular is often missing from engineering schools: women. Most schools want to encourage more women engineering majors to attend their school, so women may find engineering student grants available to advance this goal. There are also targeted grants are available to students in any given engineering specialty, for example the Marine Technology Society Scholarship of up to $10,000 for students interested in work that furthers the underwater use of ROVs (remotely operated vehicles).
Grant Sources for Future Engineers
These grants are all focused specifically on science and engineering students: the National SMART Grant, which carries with it a commitment to work at the Dept. Of Defence upon graduation; the National Science Foundation grant for computer science, engineering and math; NASA’s Aeronautics Program Scholarships for engineering students in this specialty and several related ones; the American Society of Civil Engineers undergrad and graduate scholarships, Google’s Anita Borg Scholarship supporting women in technology and many more.
It is never too early to begin the search online for ‘engineering student grants’, then explore the list and research the deadlines. Reviewing all this plus the specific qualifications and award amounts will help the student to see which engineering student grants are a good fit. With some of the funding issues out of the way, the only thing to keep the engineering student up at night will be thoughts of the final exam tomorrow.
