Article on Fellowships Definition
A definition of fellowship is a financial allowance that is made to a student who is either already in the first year of graduate school, or is just entering. Somewhat like a scholarship, the fellowship provides financial aid to the student but does have a few distinct differences.
The Difference
Fellowships are awarded to students on the basis of academic skills and not financial need. The scholarship or grants, however, are given to students who can demonstrate that they will not be able to attend college without financial assistance. So, while both may be grants, per say, the reasons and definitions for them are very different.
Fellowship Eligibility
There are some specific conditions that make eligibility for a fellowship possible. Academic goals that have a specific purpose, single parent status, and Grade Point Average (GPA) are a few of these conditions. Fellowship applications can be filled out directly through the university of study, or online. Eligibility requirements are found at the websites of each source, with the particular fellowship definitions included.
Fellowship Sources
The federal government is one of the main sources of funding when it comes to fellowship programs. There are also fellowships made possible through higher learning institutes, and private lenders who wish to enable students who excel in college to be able to obtain a doctorate or masters degree in their chosen field of study. Speak to the financial advisors at the college to find out more about fellowship funding.
Portable Fellowships
Unlike many scholarships, the definition of a portable fellowship allows the student to attend a college of his or her own choosing. Most scholarships are university specific, meaning that the student has to go where the scholarship dictates if they want the financial aid offered. Granted, there are fellowships that require a student to attend a particular college, but this is where the portable fellowship has the greater advantage.
Graduate Fellowships Defined
The graduate fellowship can be awarded by the federal government, a specific university, or a private or independent organization that wants to see the student achieve his or her academic goals. These fellowships can be awarded based upon the student’s academic record, needs or merit. The amount of the award is varied depending which organization is the provider and how long the fellowship.
Fellowship Designations
There are fellowships that support a variety of activities in the academic field. Many allow students to study in a specific field of expertise or do advanced research in that particular field. Often, fellowships are sponsored by organizations that want further exploration in fields that are of particular interest, such as medical advancements.
Students who are involved in a fellowship program work very hard and have a huge amount of responsibility. Significant work experiences are provided and much is expected from the fellow during the length of the fellowship. Students who wish to learn more about fellowship awards should speak to the financial aid advisor at their respective universities. Much more information can be found online, along with requirements, regulations and a plethora of other fellowship-related questions and definitions.
