Article on Fellowships For Minorities
Fellowships for minorities are offered to various and diverse minority cultures. From African Americans and Native Americans to Jewish people, and even women; there are fellowship programs available from the federal government, higher learning institutions, and private lenders and organizations for all minorities.
Minority Fellowship Programs
Fellowships for minority’s applicants can either be graduate or undergraduate students. These students are selected on their continued commitment to research, financial need, academic achievement in a specified field, and other specific reasons explained in the fellowships for minority’s application. They must also be a member of a specific racial/ethnic minority group, and they must be citizens or foreign nationals of the U.S.
Who Should Apply for a Minority Fellowship?
Any minority student who is in his or her senior year in college, or enrolled in a doctoral program is encouraged to apply for a fellowship for minorities. The applicant must be a member of a minority racial group such as Native Americans, African Americans, Latinos, American Indians, Alaskan Natives, or Asians. These major ethnic/racial groups extend to include smaller groups of minorities within each sector. For example, the Asian minorities would extend to include Koreans, Chinese and Japanese, and the Latino sector would include Cubans, Puerto Ricans, and Mexican Americans. Women are also included in minority groupings.
How are Fellows Selected?
Certain eligibility criteria are necessary for fellowships for minority’s selection, and students who meet these criteria will be considered. The selection process will be based upon the student’s commitment to research, their writing ability, and the minority identification. Graduate and undergraduate students may apply for selection directly through the university or school, or online at websites devoted to fellowships for minorities programs, of which there are hundreds of informational sites available.
Are Fellowship Funds Subject to Repayment?
Minority students who are selected to receive a fellowship award do not have to repay any money for the first year of research training. After the first year, however, they must engage in research or teaching for a period of time that equals the time of the award. For example, if the fellowship for minority’s award was for a three year time frame, the student must pay back two years by engaging in research and/or teaching.
Fellowship Applications
Applications for fellowships are available online and can be downloaded and printed. The process of applying for the fellowship will consist of the application form, a letter from a Minority Fellowship Program Director, at least three letters of recommendation, school transcripts and any essays that the applicant has written that are pertinent to research. Other documents that may be submitted are usually optional and may include the resume.
Fellowships are vital to anyone wanting to continue their higher education and to go on to earn the masters or doctorate degree of choice. Participating fellowships for minorities programs and pertinent information can be found online or at the universities where the student is attending classes.
