Article on GSA Student Grants
By the time most students reach graduate school, they have incurred tens of thousands of dollars in student loans, unless they found alternative forms of educational funding. The costs of graduate school are enough to deter many people from continuing their education, but there are bursaries that are available to help them. One of the best resources for graduate students in need of funding is GSA student grants.
GSA Helps Students
A GSA is short hand for a Graduate Students Association. They are intended to be a membership driven group for graduate students within a specific university or college. They offer various support systems for graduate students, from social to academic. Most notably are their GSA student grants that they offer in order to help students continue their educational career and to ease the financial burden of higher education.
The Benefit of a GSA Student Grants
Unlike student loans offered both by the federal government and by banking institutions, grants are a type of award that the student is not required to repay after they are done school. It is like free money to help the student. The only requirement for these scholarships is that they need to be used for educational purposes, although some GSA student grants also offer a cost of living award.
How GSA Bursaries are Funded
A Graduate Student Association is a membership organization at a particular university or college institution. They are supported by membership fees that graduate students pay to create and maintain this group. It allows for a central body of graduate students that can use the money to provide activities, awards and bursaries for its members. The GSA is also funded by the school that it resides in as well as by the federal government and private agencies.
Eligibility Requirements
The eligibility requirements for GSA student grants vary from school to school and from grant to grant. A student must be a graduate student at the institution the GSA operates at, and must almost always be a member of the Graduate Student Association. There may be other eligibility requirements depending on the nature of the bursary or grant that the student is applying for. Some bursaries, for example, may be designed to encourage female students.
Application Requirements
Several of the bursaries offered by GSA’s are based the academic career of the student, and will require transcripts or professor recommendations in order to apply. Other scholarships that they offer for financial support may require proof of income as a requirement. Each of the bursaries will indicate what is required in order to apply for it, and representatives from the Graduate Student Association will be able to clarify requirements if needed.
A Graduate Student Association grant or scholarship is an excellent way for graduate students to keep up with the rising costs of higher education. These grants are designed as a way for graduate students to help other graduate students, and are available at universities and colleges across the country.
