In today’s job market, there is a lot of demand for employees with a high level of education. Many employers are starting to look for post-secondary education as a minimum requirement for their new job hires. Unfortunately, there is a very heavy financial burden for anyone who wants to continue their education into university or college. Thankfully, there are government student grants designed to help.
Student Grants vs. Student Loans
One of the most common tools used to pay for post-secondary school is Student Loans. Many students are forced to take government and bank-owned student loans in order to pay for tuition and additional expenses. Although these loans do not have to be repaid until after the student finishes school and has a low interest rate, it still leaves most people with a very large personal debt as they are entering the job market. This has been a criticism of the student loan system for many years. Government student grants, on the other hand, are awards which are given to the student and do not have to be repaid. It is similar to a bursary or scholarship, and sometimes the words are used interchangeably.
Government Student Grants
For several years, the United States government has set aside millions in federal funding specifically designed to help student reach their educational goals. Many of these grants were specifically targeted to low-income families; however other awards based on academic achievement have since been introduced. There are scholarships available from the U.S. government for students in specific disciplines and from various backgrounds. There is a bursary available, for instance, specifically awarded to children who have lost a parent in the war in Afghanistan.
Who is Eligible?
In order to receive a student grant, you must be enrolled in an accredited university or college. In addition, students must be enrolled in at least 50% of a full course-load to be considered for federal bursaries. Most grants are awarded based on the merit of the individual student or on financial need, so evidence of either would be required in order to apply. Each of the government student grants available may also have their own set of criteria, based on the type of grant it is.
Currently Available Student Grants
There are several government student grants which are currently available, but new ones are being introduced every year. Students should refer to their financial aid office at their college or university for a complete list of the grants which are currently available. Two of the popular grants available to low-income students are the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant and the Federal Pell Grant. The Academic Competitiveness Grant is also a prominent award given out based on the academic merit of the student.
Facing the financial costs of college or university can be difficult, but government student grants are designed to ease the burden for the student and their families. They are designed to help students to achieve their educational goals.
