Article on Graduate Student Grants
For students who have completed their undergraduate studies, graduate school is an excellent option to further focus on their particular field of study while earning a coveted graduate degree. However, many graduate students face increase costs associated with continuing with their education that can seem daunting. Graduate student grants are available to help students achieve their goals.
Applying for Graduate Student Loans
There are several student loans which are still available to students entering their graduate years. Not only can they continue to apply for the same student loans they received throughout their undergraduate years, but they are also able to apply for a federal student loan which is specifically designed for those continuing into graduate studies. These loans do need to be repaid after the student is finished school, but they are low-interest and can be deferred if employment is not found right away.
Graduate Student Grants
In addition to student loans, there are grants and bursaries that are specifically designed to help graduate students continue their education. Unlike student loans, these scholarships never have to be paid back. There are a number of these graduate student scholarships which are available and offered through both the government and private groups. Financial aid offices at universities and colleges across the country will have an up to date record of the grants which are available to those continuing their graduate studies.
Types of Grants Available
The bursaries that are available to graduate students tend to be more focused on the discipline that the student is studying. For instance, there are awards specifically designed to be given to graduate students studying physics or math. Established sororities and fraternities often have grants which are made available to their members who continue into graduate studies. There are other bursaries which are designed to ease the impact on graduate students who are trying to finish school while starting families.
Grants for Minority Groups
Several graduate student grants are available for members of minority groups in the U.S. There are general minority grants from groups such as the Cornell University Graduate School Fellowships for Minorities. Specific minority groups also have their own graduate student grants and there are groups designed to assist them. An example is the Black Collegian Organization who aims to help black students find resources that they need to continue their education.
Grants for Research Projects
Many students going into graduate school are working towards a thesis or major research project within their field. The government, as well as private institutions, has several research grants which graduate students can take advantage of. In order to apply for these grants, students will have to put together a detailed research proposal and demonstrate a unique approach to their chosen topic.
These graduate student grants allow for students to continue into their graduate studies, while easing the difficulties associated with the financial strain. There are many grants available, and more being created all the time. Financial aid offices are the best places to get updated information about all the available bursaries.
