Article on Grants For Nursing Students
The national health care system has been plagued with understaffing for several years, and is currently facing a critical shortage of nurses. The huge financial burden associated with nursing programs has been a major deterrent for many potential nursing students. However, currently there are many bursaries that have been made available for those entering nursing school, or those currently enrolled.
Federally Provided Grants
As an attempt at finding new nurses to address the understaffing issue in the health care system, the U.S. government has begun to offer student grants to encourage new nurses. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has a dedicated budget which is intended to help potential nursing students. The Nursing Scholarship Program is a popular award that is offered by the government for this reason. It not only awards the cost of school but also provides a monthly cost of living award for the student. In return, those who receive this award agree to work in an understaffed medical area of the country for 2 years after graduation.
Scholarships Provided by the State
In addition to the federal funded bursaries, there is also a number of nursing student grants that are available at the state level. Currently, almost 40 states offer grants for nursing students and more will be created in the next few years, as the pressure is on for states to staff the health care system appropriately. Financial aid offices can direct students to the available nursing school bursaries that are available in their state.
Bursaries for Minorities
Members of minority groups can not only qualify for federal and state bursaries, but there are often grants for nursing students that are available specifically for minority students. An example of this is the American Indian Students United for Nursing program which is sponsored by Arizona State University. This scholarship aims at increasing the number of Native nurses across the country.
Grants from Professional Associations
Most of the grants for nursing students that are available come from professional associations and private groups, rather than from federal funding. Many of these are for students who have chosen a field of specialty within nursing, such as geriatrics or emergency room treatment. For a complete list of grants and bursaries that are available for nursing students which are provided by professional associations, contact a student financial aid office or contact the professional association directly.
Loan Repayment Programs
In additions to scholarships that are awarded during the time the student is in school, there are also several loan repayment programs that available grants for nursing students. These are used to repay large student debt accumulated over the education career of working nurses. An example of this is the Nursing Education Loan Repayment program, offered by the federal government.
There are many available grants for nursing students which are provided by many groups today. These are intended to help students to go into a nursing career, as well as providing more nurses down the road for the understaffed health-care sector.
