Article on Harvard Fellowships
Applying for a Harvard fellowship is a process known as grantsmanship and as may be expected, it is highly competitive. In addition, if a student is successful in grantsmanship, future applications for fellowships are likely to also be successful.
What is a Harvard Fellowship?
A fellowship from Harvard is a merit-based grant giving financial support to an individual for a specific project or experience. Numerous fellowships, along with internships and grants are listed on the University’s website at http://www.ocs.fas.harvard.edu/students/fellowships/grant-details.htm. A selection of available programs are outlined below.
Available Financial Support
Full financial support is provided by some Harvard fellowships for a single fellow or a small group to do research or to simply cover travel or miscellaneous expenses for a project. A number of available fellowships are courtesy of memorial funds.
Eligibility
Some of these are dependent upon the applicant being a Harvard student, whereas others, such as the Harvard Business School Fellowship are open to any eligible graduate. Some Harvard fellowships are not open to all and rely on House nomination. Students should consult their House Fellowships Advisor in this case well in advance as these deadlines tend to close earlier than for open programs.
The Henry Fellowship
This fellowship was founded by the will of the late Lady Henry for graduating seniors who are unmarried U.S. citizens. One fellowship is offered each year supported by income from the Trust which is applied toward a year of study at either Oxford or Cambridge in the UK. Travel expenses, tuition fees and a maintenance stipend are paid from the trust. The applicant must first apply to either Oxford or Cambridge and provide proof of this to be eligible for the Henry Fellowship. A detailed outline of intended study or research is required along with an exemplary academic record and references.
The Trustman Fellowship
Established by Benjamin A. Trustman, this fellowship offers an opportunity for travel with the intention of furthering the education of students showing great promise of long-range contributions to society. All Harvard graduating seniors are eligible and four or more fellowships of $18,000 are offered each year. The proposal for the fellowship should highlight the potential for critical character development and personal enrichment that the graduate will achieve through their travel plans. The fellowship is not intended for students to enrol in formal study, rather to engage in work with an NGO, community group, artistic community or other such activity.
Library Fellowships
The Pforzheimer Student Fellowships at the Schlesinger Library invites Harvard undergraduates to utilize the library’s collection for relevant research and provides awards up to $2,500 to each fellow. Preference is given to those studying in areas such as the history of work and the family, culinary arts, women’s health, or community service and volunteerism. A large part of selection is the potential to further advance knowledge in the area and the creative use of the library’s collection.
Subjects covered by Harvard Fellowships include the arts, humanities, social sciences, international relations, conservation, and photography, amongst others. Duration of fellowship, accessibility, and available financial support vary enormously between programs.
