Many students, however, do not know how to apply for student grants.
Step 1: Learn what Grants are Available
The very first step before getting down to the application process is to identify what grants, bursaries and scholarships are available to you. Take some time to go through all of the requirements for each grant available to find out if you meet all of the criteria that they ask for. Financial aid offices are an excellent source of information about what grants and scholarships are currently available. Each of the institutions that offer scholarship awards will also indicate how to apply for student grants that they make available.
Step 2: Gather Necessary Information
In order to apply for student grants and bursaries, a certain amount of information will need to be gathered and submitted. Nearly all grants and bursaries will ask for a copy of the student’s current high school or college transcript. These transcripts must be ordered from the school that they attended, and there is a fee associated with ordering them. Be sure to check if the bursary or grant requires an original copy of the transcript to be submitted, or if they will accept copies. Scholarships and bursaries designed to ease the burden on lower income families will also need proof of income of the student and their parents.
Step 3: Ask for Help
Guidance counselors and other education counselors across the country are trained in how to apply for student grants, and can help students find scholarships and grants available to them. Counselors can recommend awards that students should apply for, can assist in completing the application, and can even offer recommendation on the student’s behalf to award agencies if they are an exceptional student. Advice will almost always help students to find and receive grants more often than students that attempt to apply without it.
Step 4: Complete and Submit the Grant Application
Most applications for grants and scholarships will require a number of questions to be answered. Some can be personal questions about the students and their performance, and others can be about the student’s long term goals. Some bursaries require that students write an essay to go along with their application. Take the time to make sure that the answers and essays that are submitted are excellent and accurate. It is a good idea to have someone proof read the finished application before sending it, even if they don’t know how to apply for student grants.
Student grants are an excellent way to fund an educational career. Unlike student loans, they do not require repayment, and are intended to help students succeed in their studies. Putting effort into completing an amazing grant application may mean the difference between receiving the award and not being chosen.
