Article on Library Fellowships
Library fellowships offer support to a researcher to spend significant amounts of time examining a particular library’s collection for a specific project. The fellowships tend to be available to those researchers who would otherwise not be able to visit the library or spend enough time there to complete their project.
NACBS Library Fellowships
The NACBS (North American Conference on British Studies), in collaboration with the Huntington Library, offers an annual Library Fellowship. This provides assistance for dissertation research in British Studies using the library’s collection. The tenure requires residence at the library and offers a stipend of $2000. Applicants to this program mush be enrolled in a PhD program in a U.S. or Canadian institution and be permanent residents or citizens of either country. Fellowships can be as short as a month for this program.
The Newberry Library
Library Fellowships at the Newberry give assistance to researchers on either a short or long-term basis (1-2months or 6-11months). The short term fellowships are usually restricted to those outside of Chicago, a factor which does not apply to fellows for the longer term program. Short term projects usually are for examination of specific pieces in the collection. Larger scholarly works are the usual matter of longer fellowships.
Houghton at Harvard
Houghton Library Fellowships preferentially select scholars whose work is based on their unique collection of rare books and manuscripts at Harvard College. Fellows also gain access to other libraries at the University such as Widener. Fellowships are normally granted to those outside commuting distance of the library. A four week residence, whether continuous or not, is the minimum expected, and the stipend is $3000. Other than the Pantzer Fellowship, which should be specifically applied for, the selection committee determines which fellowship best suits the researcher’s proposal.
Twenty-Five Library Fellowships
The John Carter Brown Library fellowship program gives both US and foreign scholars the chance to apply for twenty-five fellowships awarded each year. These range from two to ten months and apply to qualified researchers whose projects are relevant to the Library’s holdings. Longer term projects may have a monthly stipend up to $4,200 and shorter projects around $2,100. Candidates may indicate a desire for a short-term fellowship if their longer-term proposal is not accepted. All library fellowships are residential, requiring relocation to Providence and continuous residence for the duration of the award. Those living within commuting distance do not usually qualify.
Fellowships at the Folger
The Folger Shakespeare Library offers research fellowships encouraging cross-disciplinary dialogue among researchers or the early modern period. There are limited numbers of both long and short-term posts each year ranging from 1-3months to 6-9months. Those without a PhD in hand are unlikely to be successful for the highly competitive long-term places. They may apply for the short-term library fellowship but face odds of 1 in 5 most years as they are competing against senior scholars.
Fellows are expected to become part of the community of users at each particular institution, spending the majority of their time there. These fellowships aim to highlight the specific research opportunities available for each library and its collection.
