Article on MD Fellowships
MD Fellowships provide the opportunity for physicians to gain solid experience of research, clinical, and teaching skills to become successful investigators alongside other MDs and PhDs. Some programs allow a fellow to pursue a research project which draws upon the diverse experience available in an academic hospital setting. A selection of available MD Fellowships is outlined below.
Durham Center for Health Services Research in Primary Care
Fellowships at Durham allow the fellow to choose a three or four person research committee who will review their research proposal, monitor its progress, and ensure resource availability throughout the fellowship. Fellows complete several mentored research projects, rather than just one specialized project during the fellowship.
The Durham VA Medical Center and the Duke University Division of General Internal Medicine also sponsor fellowships in Health Services Research, Ambulatory Care, and Women's Health. These are two-year programs which provide physicians the opportunity for collaboration with MD and PhD investigators who have both general medicine and subspecialty mentoring experience.
MD Fellowship at Hope Foundation
The Hope Foundation is a cancer-focused care provider and offers a fellowship program in Translational Medicine. The fellow receives $100,000 over two years in support of a project which has direct applications and benefits to improving patient care by incorporating laboratory research into general front line medicine.
Applicants must have a PhD, MD, or equivalent degree and be in the first three years of a junior level faculty appointment when applying for the fellowship. Experience in cancer translational research is also a prerequisite as is membership of the Southwest Oncology Group. Ineligible candidates include those who have been funded by the tobacco industry in the four years prior to application, including any current funding.
Yale University Clinical Medical Microbiology MD Fellowship
The Clinical Medical Microbiology MD Fellowship available at Yale last a year and is an ACGME (Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education) - approved program. It is aimed at physicians who are Board certified or eligible in Clinical Pathology or Infectious Diseases. The program can also qualify a fellow for Board eligibility and gives the opportunity for an additional 2-3 years with a Yale mentor in intense research training in the laboratory if their proposal requires more than a year to complete.
An Overseas Opportunity
An MD Fellowship in Germany, courtesy of The Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds, which is a not-for-profit institution, provides support for a fellow whose experimental MD thesis is based on basic biomedical research. It is a program which provides gifted young researchers the opportunity to access excellent facilities in which to conduct their project. Applicants must be 24 years old or less with an excellent academic record. Fellowships are usually 10-12 months, with the possibility of a 3 month extension. A travel allowance may be applicable. Relocation is required, along with a full commitment to the research undertaken at the institution.
Several other programs are available specializing in different areas of research and with program lengths and stipends varying considerably. Funding for these fellowships is low in comparison to average pay for a qualified doctor, but fellowships can provide invaluable support for specialized research projects.
