Article on Media Fellowships
Media Fellowships allow professionals from disciplines other than journalism the opportunity to gain experience in a media environment. Journalists may also find encouragement through these programs to focus their activities on particular issues such as the environment.
Science and the Media
Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research endowment fund (AHFMR) media fellowship program lasts 12 weeks during summer and gives students with strong biomedical science backgrounds the chance to work with media organizations as researchers, reporters, and production assistants. The program aims to strengthen links between scientists and the media, make students aware of how scientific events become news, and develop their ability to communicate complex ideas to the public.
The fellowship also aims to increase public understanding of science and technology and enhance in-depth media coverage of the area. Students and hosts are visited halfway through the 12week program and a final report is submitted at the end of the summer. Previous hosts have included CBC where medical students have participated in creating new radio series covering health issues.
The Steinbrenner Institute
This short four day media fellowship gives a select group of national media specialists the opportunity to spend time at the Carnegie Mellon campus in the environmental research facility. The aim is to get journalists to examine issues in depth and talk to environmental engineers, scientists and policy analysts and thereby increase media presence of the work done at the institution.
The Steinbrenner Institute’s fellowship focuses on broadening and consolidating the journalists’ understanding of scientific ideas, particularly in an environmental context. It aims to foster increased media coverage of environmental issues in an intelligent and thorough fashion.
Mass Media Fellowship Program
This is a ten-week summer program provided by the American Physical Society which gives two physics students the opportunity to work full-time as reporters, researchers and production assistants in nationwide mass media organizations. Remuneration is $4,500, plus a travel allowance of up to $1,000.
Priority is given to physics students or those in a closely related field and those with outstanding written and oral skills are preferred. Undergraduates through to postdoctoral researchers can apply if they have a passion to increase their communication skills and learn about the relation between science and the media.
A Fellowship for Foreign Students
The British Science Association Media Fellowships provide work placements of 3-8 weeks with a broadcast, national press, or internet journalist. Fellows learn to appreciate the constraints of the media and the potential to create accurate and informed content about scientific developments. Some fellows go on to freelancing jobs incorporating academic and journalistic talents to communicate important scientific ideas to the public.
Applicants must be either UK residents or be working full-time in the UK with at least two years remaining on their contract. They must be a practicing scientist, engineer, social scientist, or clinician, with at least two years postgraduate experience in their professional area of expertise.
There are numerous fellowships available to help journalists examine the way they acquire and report information about specific topics, or for professionals in other areas to discover the inner workings of media outlets. Have a search online for the various fellowships available.
