Article on Medical School Fellowships
After completing their residency and an internship, physicians in the U.S. may undertake a medical school fellowship. These sub-specialty training programs usually last more between one and three years and fellows act as an attending physician or consultant physician in the generalist field, such as pediatrics or internal medicine, in which they have trained.
Specialized Medical School Fellowships
Most medical sub-specialties are accredited by the Accredited Council for Graduate Medical Education. Numerous fields are highly specialized and necessitate post-residency formal training. Fellowships are granted by application to the sub-specialty organizing board or individual program and often include a requirement to conduct a certain amount of research. Below are a select few of the wide array of medical school fellowships available.
Harvard Medical School Fellowship in Pharmaceutical Policy Research
This fellowship trains clinicians, researchers, PhD and post-doctoral students to become actively involved in research on policy decisions relating to pharmaceuticals. Thoroughly established policy investigators guide fellows from the U.S. and abroad as they participate in projects concerning pharmaceutical use. Specific concerns addressed in this fellowship are the effects, both desirable and undesirable, of medical policies in respect of cost, access, outcomes, and quality of pharmaceutical care, particularly in vulnerable communities, both in the U.S. and worldwide.
University of California
The Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Training Program lasts eighteen months and trains skilled critical care clinicians, teachers and investigators specializing in pulmonary medicine. Applicants must hold a valid J-1 visa, be a permanent U.S. resident or citizen and have completed three years internal medicine training. Fellows pursuing careers in biomedical research, clinical care or education can apply for tailored programs offering exposure to related disciplines and collaboration with other clinicians on research projects. Fellowships, usually capped at three years, can be extended to four years to facilitate further research.
Howard Hughes Medical Institute
The fellowships offered at the HHMI include a joint initiative with the Foundation Fighting Blindness (FFB) for ophthalmology research students. An annual stipend of around $27,000, a fellow’s allowance of $5,500, and a research allowance of $5,500 are available. Eligible applicants for these research fellowships must be enrolled in a medical or dental school. Except for the National Institutes of Health, the fellowship can be carried out at any academic or nonprofit institution in the U.S., or abroad if the fellow's mentor is affiliated with a U.S. institution.
University of Buffalo
Based within the Division of Infectious Diseases this fellowship offers a thorough grounding in infectious diseases with fellows given the opportunity to observe a variety of relevant activities in four hospital settings. Fellows have access to excellent laboratory facilities and support with clinical research and are given intensive training in clinical infectious diseases. Applicants must be U.S. accredited residency graduates and should have a strong research background as this is a key element of the fellowship’s raison d’etre.
A physician is allowed to practice with no direct supervision by other physicians after completing a fellowship in their relevant subspecialty. Several medical school fellowships programs are available and the student should thoroughly research the available opportunities to discover their desired niche before applying.
