African American Graduate Students
One of the most prestigious minority graduate fellowships for African Americans is the AAFP or the African American Fellowship Program, sponsored by Troy University. It awards $45,000 to each successful applicant who wishes to finish his or her doctoral study in the institution. The American Society for Engineering Education also offers engineering fellowships with the Helen T. Carr Fellowship Program, and awards $10,000 per year to each fellow. Another prestigious one is the Woodson Fellowship Program, which has been attracting outstanding African-Americans in humanities and social science fields of study for a 2-year fellowship in pre and post-doctoral levels.
Hispanic Graduate Students
About 4.9% of this minority group receives private sector fellowships. Among the most coveted Hispanic minority graduate fellowships is the CHCI Fellowships, or the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute Fellowships. It offers Latinos a paid program that will give them the chance to experience public policy at a national level. In addition, the McKnight Doctoral Fellowship has been created to support Hispanics and other under-represented minorities to attain a PhD. The program awards $17,000 annually, which covers tuition and stipend. The Texas Association of Chicanos in Higher Education or TACHE also awards graduate fellowships of $2000 to students with Hispanic heritage and meet eligibility requirements.
Native American Graduate Students
Minority graduate fellowships offered to Native Americans include the American Indian Graduate Center Fellowship programs, such as: the Elizabeth Furbur Fellowship for women with fields of study covering Arts and Literature; Gerald Peet Fellowship granted to graduate students in medical or health related fields; and the Dr. George Blue Spruce Fellowship given to support Native Americans who wish to pursue a graduate degree in Dentistry. The Smithsonian Institution is among the many research institutions that offer minority graduate fellowships to Native Americans. Their program offers stipends for a specified number of days to do research work in different fields of study.
The federal agencies and private institutions clearly continue to put a high regard on the assistance and support provided to minority graduate students, including African Americans, Hispanics and Latinos, and Native Americans. Universities and graduate schools across the country always have fellowships available for the underrepresented minority. And although only a small percentage are given the awards, it has truly helped thousands of minority students achieve higher education through the financial assistance they have obtained from these fellowships.
