Some PhD Fellowship programs that are offered require a professor or university board to nominate specific students who have exceptional research skills and academic backgrounds before they can even be considered.
Who Offers these Programs?
PhD Fellowships are offered by a plethora of private and public institutions all around the world. Some very notable public companies offer highly competitive and well funded fellowships, including: IBM, Microsoft, Google, and many more. Businesses or private groups offer these programs as a way to fund research studies that they can later benefit from the results of. It also allows research firms, private companies and federally controlled departments to find excellent potential researchers to join their teams. In addition, universities often offer their own fellowship awards, in order to attract a higher caliber of doctoral students.
How do PhD Fellowships Work?
Usually, if a group or institution has a fellowship available, they look for schools to nominate students who excel in their field of study. If awarded, the doctoral student will be granted a monetary award to aid with their educational and research costs. This award may be granted in a lump sum, or gradually over the course of the school year. There are global fellowships which will allow the student to use the award at any school, but more commonly awards are handed out for specific school. The educational institute that the student is attending may have their own doctoral fellowship to offer.
Obtaining a fellowship as a PhD student is an important way to help pay for the rising costs of education. These awards do not require repayment, and can help to ease the financial burden of university.
