Article on Research Fellowships
Many students do not even consider fellowships or wait until the very end of their useful phase to apply. Research fellowships are a great way to not only fund graduate education, but also build a resume and pay post-graduate living expenses. Knowing what types are available is the first stage in the process.
Fellowship Basics
Fellowships, scholarships, and internships are words that are often interchanged with each other. In fact, a fellowship is usually a combination of scholarship or grant money along with work or career training. They are offered through many avenues and are based more on academic merit than financial need. Research fellowships specifically are geared toward a certain field and line of research. Some can be used at any institution but many are university specific.
Types of Research Fellowships
There are three main types of research fellowships as well as three types of grantors. Fellowships can be given at all levels of post secondary education and at the post-doctorate level. The balance of work required and the type of grant money offered will differ depending on the level of the candidate and the program. This aid can be found through the federal and state governments, individual institutions, and a variety of associations, organizations, and companies concerned with funding research.
Undergraduate Fellowships
Fellowships for undergraduate students are usually simply referred to as paid internships. In most cases, the work is performed during the summer months. The student receives a stipend during the time the work is performed and tuition costs are partially paid for the following school year. This type of fellowship can greatly increase a student's chances of being accepted to the graduate school of choice.
Graduate Fellowships
Graduate students are the population for which most research fellowships are offered. Most graduate fellowships pay the student a monthly amount that is equal to or slightly above a living wage as well as paying some or all tuition costs. These fellowships are great for students that must teach or are conducting research for a dissertation or thesis. The money provides an income sop that the student does not have to seek work outside the field and can concentrate on their desired studies.
Postgraduate Fellowships
Fellowships are even available for those who are done with school. Of course, these programs do not pay tuition. For those who have earned a masters or PhD, these programs offer additional training and research opportunities for those new to a field. They are a great way to build a resume and gain contacts within the community. In medical fields, fellowships provide new doctors with specialized training and medical research opportunities within their field. This allows them to better serve the medical community and earn a spot in a niche medical field.
Many organizations want to fund research through fellowships. No matter whether an applicant is a student or a new professional, research fellowships are a great way to fund education and living expenses. They can help to build careers and provide a change for greater future success.
