Student Financial Aid

Article on Student Financial Aid
The cost of getting an education just keeps rising. The vast majority of students get some sort of financial assistance with their higher-education costs. Students who do not consider themselves to be poverty stricken can still qualify for assistance. Many people think that financial aid is only for ‘kids’ entering college for the first time but this is not true; older students and students returning to school to complete their education are also eligible. Grants, scholarships and student loans are out there to help students whether they are applying to an Ivy League college or a 2 year technical school. Whatever the educational goal, it makes sense to reach out and find what is available.
Get a Coach
The student should contact the school financial aid office to see what may be available. Many colleges and universities, as well as some technical schools, have their own scholarships and grants to help students who want to attend their school. Scholarships are generally given on the basis of grades, as the name implies. Grants are often based on need. Many grants and most scholarships take into account other factors, such as extra-curricular or volunteer activities in your history. Most also require a personal essay and perhaps references. Let your counselor help you sort through the possibilities and come up with a plan. He or she can tell you how to put your best foot forward, by outlining what the decision makers may be looking for when they award a grant.
Start With the Basics
Anyone seeking money for school should fill out the FAFSA, the online form for Federal financial aid. The student will need to provide details about their financial situation and their parents as well, if they are still dependents. The intended school must be listed on the form as well, so that the government can assess just how much help will be needed and how much help the student may be eligible to receive. This aid will come in the form of grants and/or loans. Grants are basically free money and do not need to be repaid. Student loans must be paid back, but the interest rate on a government loan is usually quite low. And the student does not have to begin repaying the loan until after they graduate.
Off Campus
Student financial aid can also be found outside of school. A thorough online search is called for since government and school aid may not be enough to pay for the entire cost of school. True, many students will work or get help from parents to make up the difference, but it pays to check the options online. Grants or scholarships from local community groups, unions, public and private companies and state governments may be available. These grants are usually either student-specific or subject-specific. Students must look carefully at qualifications and deadlines to make sure all are acceptable and workable. The organization or business offering the funding, if they are not well-known, should be carefully researched before giving any personal information to apply.
