Student Grants For Laptops

Article on Student Grants For Laptops
As technology advances, laptops are getting more powerful, and at the same time smaller and less expensive. This is a good trend. Unfortunately they’re still not affordable for every student. Serving as a notebook, textbook, virtual library, and communication device all in one, laptop computers are not just a nice tool for students, today they are necessity. Student grants for laptops (specifically) are not generally available, but there are ways to access grant funds to pay for one, or get one through a community program.
Schools May Help
Students who have a current student grant covering school supplies or school expenses, rather than tuition only, can elect to use those funds for a laptop. If this is not the case, the student should contact their school or intended school, as they may have grant funds to help pay for a laptop for needy students. Otherwise the school may be able to make a referral to a local community service organization that may be able to provide assistance. Some online-only universities offer their students a free laptop upon enrollment, to help complete their studies and promote the school at the same time.
Government Assistance
City, county and other local government agencies may have funds, referrals, give-aways or even student grants for laptops. It pays to check their websites for these often poorly publicized programs. Students with a disability can contact the local vocational rehabilitation office, which may have funds for laptops to help individuals return to the workforce or for use as assistive communications devices. If the student is (or lives with) a senior citizen, the Department of Aging may be able to provide the senior with a referral for a computer grant from a local community group.
Under the Radar Sources
It’s a good idea to check online for additional charitable or local community groups that may be able to provide assistance for those in need of a laptop for educational purposes. Each agency will have its own definition of needy and there may be other qualifications as well, such as age. Search online for local ‘computer recyclers’ in the area. These organizations often refurbish laptops donated to them or discarded - and may give them to students or people in need. Most do not advertise themselves as giving away laptops, but it is often mentioned on their web sites somewhere. Beware those who do advertise, as these are generally scams.
The Bottom Line
No one needs a laptop more than a student. Hopefully, sooner rather than later, there will be an organized national program in the US to ensure all students, children or households have a computer. Until then, getting a free laptop for school will require a bit of ingenuity and some research skills. If it’s not possible to use part of an existing student grant for a laptop, there are other avenues out there. All students should be sure to take advantage of the big student discounts offered by most computer and software manufacturers, whether they pay with grant funds or not.
