Article on Student Grants
Attending college is expensive and the price is only going up. Yet schooling, and specifically higher education, is becoming more and more important in the digital age. Luckily there are student grants available for most any field of study and every type of student. It is not necessary to be a straight-A student or a poverty stricken individual to get a student grant. Grants do exist for those with a 4.0 GPA it’s true, and there are grants for the needy as well. But many grants go to students who fall somewhere in between.
How Grants Are Awarded
The reality is that, even the 4.0 GPA does not guarantee a grant or scholarship. All grants have more than one qualifying factor and most give a certain amount of weight to each factor. For instance qualifications like excellent grades, extra-curricular activities or volunteer work, an excellent personal essay included in the application, whether the student’s parents attended same college where the student is seeking the grant (alumnae status) – are each given a value and totaled up to come up with a list of top candidates. Then the grants or scholarships are awarded going down the list until the funds run out. Often the funds run out pretty quickly.
Don’t count on Just One
Students are well advised to apply to as many grants as possible. If one does not come through, another just might. First apply online at FAFSA.com, using the free student aid form, to qualify for a government aid package that may include low-interest loans as well. It pays to follow up on all recommendations from the school about grants that they themselves may offer and others they will refer to, such as community organizations. School financial aid counselors have valuable insights into the selection process for certain grants and how to apply successfully.
Find All Possible Grants
Online research is invaluable in turning up student grants. Some local community organization’s grants may be small dollar awards, but they may also be lesser-known and competition may also be less. Applying may be well worth the time, provided the application doesn´t require too much time to prepare. For example, if the grant requires a short film on a certain subject –if that is not something that can be done quickly and cheaply – and the grant award amount is low, it may not be worthwhile. Every dollar counts when paying for school, but the student’s time is valuable as well. Granting organizations should be researched as much as possible, even if the site looks legitimate, to avoid scams.
More Ways to Search Out Grants
Student should search every category they may fall into for grant funds. Anything in a student’s background, heritage or area of study interest could yield a grant possibility. There are grants for women, men, single parents, ethnic groups, returning students, certain age groups like seniors, military dependents, future engineers, art students, pianists who play Chopin and many more. There are grants available from labor and professional unions / guilds, churches, public and private businesses and more – all waiting to be searched out.
