A lot of funding goes into universities in the United States due to the recognized importance of university education in the advancement of the frontiers of knowledge and development. As a result of this funding, several financial aid schemes are available for students who may otherwise find it difficult or impossible to pursue a university education, especially graduate study. These study fellowships funded by the government, institutions and private organizations provide billions of dollars annually to both undergraduate and graduate students.
Government Funded Study Fellowships
There are several examples of these fellowships and just as the name implies, they are all funded by the government at local, state and national levels. A lot of these programs are handled by the Department of Education and its subsidiaries and they all provide financial assistance in various forms to both undergraduate and graduate students. Additionally, these government funded fellowships cover a wide range of fields allowing a lot of students to benefit from them. Some examples include the Fulbright Program, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Ferguson Fellowship Program, and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Graduate Fellowship Program.
Privately Funded Study Fellowships
Examples of these fellowship programs include The National Physical Science Consortium Graduate Fellowships in the Physical Sciences, The American Educational Research Association (AERA) Fellowship program and American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) Minority Doctoral Fellowship program. These programs all have one thing in common: they are all funded by privately owned and administered organizations. Such organizations abound in the country and are responsible for a large chunk of the total fellowship funds made available to undergraduate and graduate students annually.
Institutional Study Fellowships
These types of fellowship programs are the most restrictive of the three categories. This is because the fellowships awarded are only valid in the institution awarding them. Thus, only prospective or continuing students of the awarding university are eligible to apply for such programs. Furthermore, the fellowships are also restrictive in the sense that they are also usually available in limited fields especially for graduate studies. Virtually all the universities in the country provide fellowship programs for students and despite their restrictiveness, they go a long way in helping thousands of undergraduate and graduate students finance their studies.
Criteria for Study Fellowships
The eligibility requirements for these fellowship programs vary according to the different categories of undergraduate and graduate studies; they also vary from fellowship to fellowship. As such, it is imperative for every student to find out the requirements for a specific fellowship in order to know if he or she is eligible. The best place to do this is at the Fellowship office of the University or on the institution’s website. Additionally, there are several resources online that are of tremendous benefit and these include: FinAid, FastWeb, and Collegeboard. These and other similar sites provide a lot of relevant and precise information on available fellowships and the necessary requirements.
