Article on Surgery Fellowships
Surgery is a branch of medicine that has several subdivisions. Some of the subdivisions include: general surgery, neurological surgery, colon and rectal surgery, orthopedic surgery, ophthalmic surgery, thoracic surgery, vascular surgery and plastic surgery. In order to become a surgeon (just like other specialties in medicine), after the medical degree has been obtained, further training or residencies are usually necessary to attain specialist status. These are also known as surgery fellowships. Some of the available ones in the US include the under listed.
Johns Hopkins Cardiothoracic Surgery Fellowship
Johns Hopkins is one of the best hospitals in the world and as such, the various surgery fellowships offered are highly regarded. This particular program of The Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery provides surgical residents a three year training program in cardiothoracic surgery. The first year of the program is divided into 6 months each of Blue and Red cardiac surgical services. The second year is also divided into 6 months each of general thoracic surgery services and an elective service of thoracic, endovascular, or cardiac surgery. The final year is spent as a chief resident in both Blue and Red cardiac surgery services.
Johns Hopkins Vascular Surgery Fellowship
This program is only available to persons who have undergone at least five years of training in general surgery. The fellowship provides the graduate with the opportunity of writing the Certifying Examination in Vascular Surgery administered by the American Board of Surgery. The Vascular Surgery Fellowship which runs for one year develops proficiency in the precise diagnosis and management of a wide range of circulatory disorders which include lymphatic, venous and arterial disease. The Fellow will also participate in clinical research projects, and present the findings at both national and regional meetings.
Northwest Hospital Minimally Invasive Surgery Fellowship
Northwest Hospital offers a fellowship in Minimally Invasive Surgery for individuals that have completed a 5 year residency program in general surgery. Typically, the program performs a lot of minimally invasive procedures yearly such as laparoscopic colon resections, splenectomies, ventral incisional hernias, upper GI procedures and others. These and other components of the program provide the fellow with a rich training on the skill sets, experiences and core competencies that fully trained surgeons must have in order to be competitive in today’s surgical world.
University of Washington Transplant Surgery Fellowships Program
This program under the department of surgery of the University’s School of Medicine offers individuals who have completed an ACGME (Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Examination)-accredited American or Canadian General Surgery Residency Program or its approved equivalent 2-year clinical surgery fellowships. The multi-organ abdominal transplant program which is approved by the ASTS (American Society of Transplant Surgeons), aims to develop a crop of future leaders who will be authorities in the field of transplantation.
In conclusion, the list of surgery fellowships above is in no way exhaustive. There are hundreds of other surgical fellowship programs available in any field of surgery; a search on the internet will reveal this.
