Article on Types Of Graduate Fellowships
Undoubtedly, graduate study in the United States requires a lot of money. This can be an obstacle and it is easy to get discouraged especially when the cost of tuition, accommodation, feeding, books and other expenses are tallied up. Thankfully, there are several financial assistance schemes (also known as fellowships) available in the U.S. today which help in alleviating the cost of graduate study. There are different types of graduate fellowships and the first step to becoming a fellow lies in having an understanding of these fellowships.
Graduate Fellowship or Scholarship
Typically, a fellowship is simply a grant or sum of money awarded to graduate students enrolled in a master’s degree or doctoral degree program. The grants are usually referred to as fellowships and not scholarships as used for undergraduate financial aid. Qualified and successful awardees are subsequently referred to as fellows. The fellowship usually covers the full tuition for the duration of the program, provides a stipend, and also funds the student’s research project. In some cases, some other allowances such as summer allowances are provided.
Types of Graduate Fellowships
1: Government Funded Fellowships
Of the different types of graduate fellowships, government funded fellowships account for a large percentage. The U.S. government places a lot of value on graduate education due to its valuable contribution to the society. There are hundreds of government funded fellowships at the national and state levels and examples include: the U.S. Education Department's Jacob K. Javits Fellowships Program, U.S. Department of Energy Computational Sciences Graduate Fellowships and Environmental Protection Agency's STAR (Science to Achieve Results) Fellowships for Graduate Environmental Study.
2: Institutional or University Fellowships
University fellowships are the oldest types of fellowships because the practice of awarding fellowships for graduate studies started from there. Virtually all universities have one form of fellowship or another for prospective and continuing graduate students. The only snag to institutional fellowships is that they are restrictive. Unlike the other types of graduate fellowships that allow the student the freedom of studying in any university and field of study, university fellowships are restricted to the university and also, often to particular fields of study
3: Privately Funded Fellowships
This is the third category in the different types of graduate fellowships. A lot of private companies, charities, foundations and bodies contribute billions of dollars annually to fund graduate studies with particular emphasis on research oriented study. The fellowship awards typically cover all aspects of the fellow’s program. Some of these fellowships include: the Howard Hughes Medical Institute Pre-doctoral Fellowships in Biological Sciences, the Consortium for Graduate Study in Management Graduate Fellowships for Talented Minorities, and the Microsoft Research Fellowships.
Getting Graduate Fellowships
Whatever the type of fellowship being sought, it is important to start the application process early. Getting a fellowship is very competitive and demanding process, so starting out early will help in being adequately prepared. The fellowship offices of all Universities or their websites have information on the requirements for specific fellowships and should be consulted.
