The University of California at Los Angeles is one of the most well recognized schools in the United States. It is one of the largest campuses under the University of California, covering about 419 acres (170 hectares) in the Westwood area of Los Angeles. The institution is also one of the leading universities in research in the country and is always among the first ten universities in research funding. Given these antecedents, there are several UCLA fellowships available, majorly to graduate students of the university.
General Requirements for UCLA Fellowships
The UCLA fellowships are open to all graduate students of the university and are typically very competitive. Characteristically, the fellowships are for two semesters or three terms (one academic year) but there are some variations depending on the department. Intending recipients are required to register for a minimum of 12 units per quarter and also be fully involved in research. Of course, they must also maintain a satisfactory progress throughout their stay as this is usually evaluated.
Graduate Opportunity Fellowship Program (GOFP)
The GOFP has a year’s tenure with the eligibility status applying only to graduate students pursuing any type of master’s degree program. Selected fellows are provided with an allowance of $12,500 in addition to the payment of the program’s regular registration fees. The program was conceived majorly as a way of providing equal opportunity and access to students interested in graduate studies, especially the minorities from all types of backgrounds. As such, applications from these quarters are highly solicited and welcomed.
Eugene V. Cota-Robles Fellowship
This is a 4-year fellowship program that provides financial support to a few graduate students running a PhD program in addition to being interested in a college or university career as a researcher or lecturer. The program is funded by the UCLA graduate division and the office of the President of the University of California and it awards a stipend of $20, 000 in addition to the regular registration fees and first year nonresident tuition. Applicants have to be recommended by their faculty or department and must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents demonstrating exceptional promise and potential.
Charles F. Scott Fellowship
The Charles F. Scott Fellowship program is specifically designed for graduate students that obtained their bachelor’s degree from UCLA. However, graduate students with their bachelor’s degree from the other campuses of the University of California, can also apply for consideration. Fellows are awarded up to fifteen thousand dollars to graduate students studying a course in any area of public or governmental administration whether local, state or national.
Other UCLA Fellowships
Some of the other types of UCLA fellowships include: Kasper and Siroon Hovannisian Fellowship, Rose and Sam Gilbert Fellowship, Will Rogers Memorial Fellowship, Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship (TITLE VI)and Karekin Der Avedisian Memorial Endowment Fund just to mention a few. All these fellowships award varying sums of money to qualified applicants.
