What is a Grant?
The best thing about university student grants is that they are free money that does not have to be repaid, just like a scholarship. They are different from scholarships in that many scholarships are merit based. To be eligible for virtually any grant, the FAFSA form must be completed, which allows the federal government to determine the actual need for financial support. Though most grants are given free of any obligation, some require the student to provide volunteer service or work in a certain field.
Federal and State Grants
As part of filling out a FAFSA, the student is automatically applying for federal and state grants. Here are the four Federal Grants currently being offered. The Pell Grant and FSEOG are the only need based federal grants. They are given to the neediest students, usually with household incomes less than $20,000 per year. In order to be eligible for an FSEOG, a student must be eligible for a Pell Grant. ACG and SMART Grants are merit and need based. Another grant for educators called TEACH is merit based. State grant programs vary from state to state and are on the state's website.
Other Sources of Grants
There are many other places to get university student grants. The first place to look is the school. They often have their own grant programs. Many non-profits and professional associations also offer grants for school. Corporations also have begun giving grants to students for business or fields related to their enterprise. Grants are given through these programs through a variety of criteria including ethnicity, age, program of study, and being in a military family. Becoming more popular are grants for occupations that are greatly understaffed such as teachers and nurses.
Finding Grants
Of course, the first place most people will look for university student grants is the internet. Be very careful of any websites that charge a fee to send or provide information about grants. This information is free and widely available. How is this information found? Many legitimate websites exist that provide lists of grants being offered. Without receiving a fee from web users, these sites list the source, the name of the grant program, eligibility requirements, award amounts, and a deadline for applying. A link to the website for the program or company will be available as well as contact information.
Many types of grants are available to help students. Even if the need or educational merit does not exist to receive Federal or State grants, many other sources exit that give university student grants. The best way to finance a college education is to do some research and be willing to search for many grant options.
